What do YOU think about the U.S. Patent Office Cancelling the Washington Redskins' trademark?
The U.S. patent office says that the name "Redskins" is offensive and has cancelled the NFL franchise's patent. Some are crying foul against the Redskins. Others are crying foul against the Patent office and some think both are out of line -- that the team name is offensive, but that free speech includes the right of the franchise to choose an offensive name. Some say that the majority of Native Americans don't find the name offensive (though the initial question was raised by native tribe members). Other's say "Who CARES what the majority thinks????? The majority of Americans used to be opposed to school integration. The majority of people used to be opposed to same sex marriage. The majority of people, including black people, used to think that the term "nigger" was acceptable. The majority of people used to think the term "fag" was okay. Since when did the majority require protection?" What do YOU say?
The Patent Office overstepped. They should grant the team their trademark and the team should keep their name.
The Patent office overstepped but the team should still change their name.
The patent office did the right thing. The team should suck it up.
The team should have never let it get this far. The name is offensive.

i honestly dont know how people can give such power to simple words... srsly what gives a negative meaning to a word is the context of how its used, srsly why are people so touchy and self centered, and let every little bit offend them?.

Mascots shouldn't be based on racial stereotypes. Even if they are, the group the stereotype is about gets to decide if it's offensive or not. I don't think it's an 'all or none' situation either; if any say it's offensive, it's offensive and should be removed and discouraged.

The best thing to do, of course, is for people to "vote with their wallets". Stop buying tickets and merchandise, and they'll soon see that "free speech" won't pay their bills.

I think it is wrong to cancel it. It is political correctness run amok. Liberalism along with Political Correctness is killing our society.
