How Many Years Until You Get a New Computer?

I have always wondered, do people buy computers when theirs finally kicks the bucket or plan in advance and save for a while to get something they really want? How many years do you think is good to wait in between computer purchases? Some people tend to think that you should get one every couple yeas because of the changes in technology, but I think that's not enough time for the real advancements in technology to happen. For me, I have always waited until my computer died before I even thought about getting another.

I reckon that I need a new desktop computer every 4 years or so. That is about the length of time they last until things can start going wrong. I plan for the next purchase as soon as I have the latest one installed, so it's not a nasty shock. I don't actually buy it until I feel the computer is near the end but I have the finance in place and start searching out what model and make and supplier of computer I want, so I can move swiftly if necessary!

For me, definitely every 5 years or so. I can upgrade the memory etc.. but the motherboard will need replacing for next generation processors. Better to just by a new PC.

I always keep a computer for at least 4 years. We have a computer repair man who is reasonably priced, so things that have gone wrong that we can't fix he does for us. Technology does change quickly, and I'm OK with waiting. As long as it does what I need and behaves properly I don't mind if my computer doesn't have the latest that the new ones offer.
