I'm Going to Be a Mystery Shopping Superstar

Years ago, a friend of mine worked in the corporate offices of Pizza Hut, a pizza chain. She asked me to mystery shop one location that had been having issues. That is, I would go in with my kids, enjoy lunch, observe service, ask some questions that the staff should know, then leave and answer some questions for the corporate office.

I got a free lunch with the kids at a place I ate anyway, I made a few bucks for my time, and I (hope) I helped to improve a business I frequented.

I've just started signing up to be a mystery shopper for a variety of companies. So far, I've signed up for three. In about 2-week time, two of the companies have bombarded me for shops I don't qualify for which gives me little faith in their operation. They have my zip code and state on the information they send me, but they send me info on shops wherein I have to live in a specific location. It doesn't make sense.

I've received three assignments from one of the three companies, however. Tomorrow is my third shop.

I'm certainly earning less than minimum wage on these right now, but that's just because of the learning curve. And sometimes, you have to consider perks when you consider wages, and the perk on tomorrows shop will put me way ahead in terms of how much it's worth.

I can' talk about specifics at this point, but I'm evaluating a service for something I really need. In fact, it was something I was going to do this week anyway, and it would have cost me about $40. I'm getting it free, and I'm earning $20. That's a good day, I think.

This week, I hope to apply to at least 10 more shops so that I have a variety of options to choose from. Do I have any mystery shoppers here? What has been your best perk? What has been your top payment? What are your gripes?

If I couldn't find business that would accept me to join, I was going to write companies as an individual offering my services. When I apply to companies I note that I am a journalist so I'm used to giving detailed observations. I think companies would like that.

I did a lot of mystery shopping a few years ago. The best advice I can give you is to plan your route. Most of the companies have some flexibility in the assignment dates. Try to plan your shops along a route and you'll make more per hour. You have to remember to do your report after each shop or they'll all blur together.

This sounds like fun. I've just never tried for it.

Search Cathy Stucker. She has a great website of legitimate companies. She's written a book on mystery shopping so she gives great adice on her website on how to do it, how to get better assignments, how to avoid scams, etc. Best, she has a list of sites and the links all set up. They are very legitimate companies. Good luck. Let me know if you sign up for any. I'd love to share stories.

That's what I"m trying to do. I can't take on any more until the first three I do have been totally evaluated. The instructions say not to be worry as a QA person will always call for the first few to offer suggestions, etc. So far, it's been a week and no one has called. I'm guessing it was okay. I set these up the same day to make that route which will save on gas.

I'm working on an ebook of ways to earn money at home. I'm unemployed from an admin job. I worked as a freelance journalist/editor for most of my life, but I've lost so many contacts. It's interesting to learn it all.
