Persona Paper Search Engine Optimization

I just did a search on Google for "" and wondered if anything has been added to the "to do list" with regard to search engine optimization?

On the first few pages of the search I found some of the main pages (rules, signup etc) and then mostly just User Profiles and Categories, plus a few Tag pages.

What I did notice though is that on Google many of the pages have the same description:

Persona Paper is a writing platform where you can earn money for writing articles online.

I had to search right down to page 18 before I found an article (title: Freedom) and the description for this was:

Freedom. This article was posted on Persona Paper - where we you can earn value for your content.

I don't know if this is because of the robots.txt settings or if Google is deciding it's own thing, but I did wonder if the descriptions of what each page did were showing on Google if the pages might rank better, and we might get a lot more traffic as a result.

For example, if the profiles showed the start of the users description (of course we would need to be able to add this to our profile), and if articles and tag/category posts also showed the description of what they are, instead of a fixed one.

Just a few thoughts and I am sure you have everything set to be worked on already.

This is a useful reminder to those of us who have our own sites too! Thanks.

Never checked this particular search, But once I log out, I will surely check this for myself. Even I like to see my article on top of the page emoticon

Indeed, we all too often forget to create SEO descriptions, or to make sure these are included in our pages. It can make a huge difference to traffic.

Yes definitely! It's always good when you do a search to see your articles up there in Google.

It has, and the page description is actually dynamic. So for example, the meta description tag for this page is "Persona Paper Search Engine Optimization. This article was posted on Persona Paper - where we you can earn value for your content."

I also just made a post about how we are going to change the code slightly to help with document structure. So for example, the page will contain a H1 tag that will be the title of your article and you will be able to include additional heading tags to further structure the document (h2,h3,h4,etc). We have also heavily incorporated the meta tags into the article. So we are marking up tags, author links, like/view/comment values in an effort to help search engines understand the content they are looking at. I know Google uses this, but I am not sure about other search engines.

Now we just need to focus on getting content that people will actually search for. For example, LoudMan posted yesterday about a review he wrote and gave a particular search string to use since he was unsure about posting a direct link. I searched for that exact string, and the review came up first, and the article he wrote on here came up 5th. So Google is definitely crawling our site (as is Yandex, Bing, Baidu, etc)... we just need the valuable content now :)

Excellent thanks. I did assume you had all bases covered, and most definitely we need to keep publishing so that the search engines have more to work with.

I assume you are using Google Webmaster Tools as well as Bing Webmaster Tools? They do things slightly differently as regards what they look for in the page headers, but will report anything that they think doesn't come up to scratch.

I have a strong feeling for example that Google places a lot of significance on having the Author and Last Updated tags on pages.

elitecodex wrote on July 16, 2014, 9:35 AM

We have the author, and I believe we have last update or the created... not sure which at the moment. I do use Google Webmaster Tools, haven't tried the Bing Webmaster Tools yet. One thing that I need to do (which I need to add to our todo list) is an automated sitemap generator.

poddys wrote on July 16, 2014, 9:45 AM

A sitemap generator can be useful, and I think on a site where there is a huge amount of content it's probably essential.
However, the search engines do crawl sites regularly, the more the content changes the more often they crawl, but there is no guarantee they will find all the pages. A sitemap generator should help.

As well as submitting your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools, it needs to be submitted to Bing as well.

Have to admit I have never had much success with Bing or Yahoo over the years though, if 5% of my traffic comes from them (combined) I am doing well.

On a slightly different note, is the Persona Paper category the best place to post about feature requests on the site, or is there a better place? I was thinking in particular about being able to add multiple images or a slideshow to a post.

This is a little technical for me, but I enjoyed reading the comments between you and Will, and I did glean that Google is acknowledging our existence, so that's a good thing!

I'm with Ali - a bit lost but fascinated by the techy talk. I may have some questions down the short road... and yay that you are on top of things. And YAY that we have dedicated members who are looking out for us :)

Sometimes it's not easy to explain something without getting technical to the point where a lot of people are out of their depth, but I think it proves here that Will and crew are definitely on top of things and I am certain they are going in the right direction with PP.

Don't copy the rest, do things better and go above and beyond in new directions. PP is innovative and it's also fun to be here.

Thanks SandraLyn. I was just checking to make sure the owners were on top of things, and I don't feel it's a bad thing to discuss things in case they hadn't thought of them, but I don't think we have any cause for worry, they definitely know what they are doing.

I'm not the brightest when it comes to the technical side of SEOs but I do know how important it is especially to a new site such as PersonaPaper. Getting our name out there is one thing, having the content that advertisers and followers actually want to read is another. Perhaps another post, this time a tutorial is in order. If one has been posted already, I'd like to read it so I can apply what was mentioned there.

Thanks in advance poddys .

So many things to remember... I am making a to do list of the necessary things to do when writing a post. Ohhh, that sounds like a good topic to research and write as a tutorial on steps to optimum optimization on Persona Pages....

So, cool! As I read these interactions, I feel like I am in a classroom. Whatever I don't understand, I can Google or YouTube on steps to the "how to" of it all.... Thanks Fella's! [I'd put an appropriate emoticon here, if I knew how]
