When I read I like to Highlight

I highlight or use notes in the margin in order to better ascertain the message or understand what I am reading. Over the years I have used a combination of both but most often I highlight. Highlighting enables me to go back to key areas of information to ensure my understanding or to better grasp the key points that are being made by the author.

Notations help if the authors points are not clear to me and require that I cross check or look for clarification elsewhere. If the information seems too long to highlight I will make a notation in the material to review pages "X to XX" rather than to highlight everything. Of course this assumes that you own the book or material that you are highlighting and are not using someone else's material. If the book is not owned by you takes notes or make copies.

Highlighting while reading is very important while studying for tests in High School and College.

I don't usually make marks on books, but my mom used to make notes when something interested her particularly, and after she passed away and I inherited some of her books, it was very comforting to run across these notations; I was learning something new about how she felt, even though we can't talk any more.
