It's gonna be mighty quiet around here...

Yesterday morning my oldest son picked up the bag of laundry that he brought home Friday and headed out the door and back to the camp where he works as a counselor. He was home for a grand total of 14 hours. He’s 19 and I’ve gotten used to him running in and out.

This morning my 15-year-old daughter headed out the door with her suitcase. She is off to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip with a group of teens and adults from our church.

I have sent kids to New York City and New Orleans and a variety of places in between over the past half dozen years or so. This is the first time I will have sent one out of the country, I’m not sure I am entirely comfortable with the idea.

Children grow up and move on with their own lives. That’s how it’s supposed to work, I understand that. But….

Instead of four children, I’ll only have two this week. Of course, the following week I will have five so the quiet will be short lived.

Hey, I know you'll miss them but try to enjoy the quiet! I know, sending my kids off always made me nervous! Speaking of quiet, it's also very quiet here right now!

Enjoy it now: it sounds like it's the quiet before the storm!

I think the out of the country thing would bother me, too. Of course I've never traveled out of the country myself so that would probably make me balk at sending my kids.

Enjoy just the two kids and have fun with the time you have with them. I'd be so petrified to send my kid to another state, let alone another country.

I visited Dominican Republic, I hope she has anti mosquitoes lotion :)

She does!

I've been sending kids out of state since my firstborn was in 7th grade (he's in college), so that doesn't really phase me anymore--as long as they are with a group with leaders that I trust.

I'm expecting a lot of chatter next week.

We cross the border into Canada at least twice a year, and I have traveled to Germany and the going out of the country doesn't bother me. Sending a child off without me, however, that's a different story.

Wait until you have grandchildren. The house will be even busier. Enjoy your quiet when you get a chance.

You can't stop them from growing up. You spend you time teaching the so they can move on.

I know, but that doesn't make it any easier...
