Changes in Upper Management

Hey everyone, I wanted to post an update on the site regarding where we are, and what is to come. Since this could get a little lengthy I'll just jump right into it.

Google AdSense

The final email came in, effectively banning me from AdSense for the foreseeable future. Doesn't look like there are any alternatives, so we need to pivot ourselves to go into a different direction. It is a shame to be banned for doing nothing wrong, but there is little recourse when it comes to Google. So as you have seen over the past few days we have been experimenting with many different ad networks. We have settled on Chitika as our best bet although we are still not making the money like before, we hope it will pick up soon.

Chitika

We are currently at their silver level, which is the middle tier. I have already seen some ads from some reputable companies which gives me hope. While we do not always have a decent ad, I am hopeful that if we are ever able to reach the gold tier then we may have a shot. Obviously I am unable to promise anything at this point, but we will see how it goes. But with that, is going to come some changes. We need to be more selective in our process of the content we are allowing on the site. elitecodex has already written a post detailing the coming changes in this area, so I will refer you to his post for more details.

Site Content

The bottom line is we need to focus on adding more quality content to the site. Please keep in mind, that this in no way affects what people are posting now. For example, you will still be able to post things like what you had for breakfast, your days activities, random poems, thoughts and opinions on current events, etc. Rest assured that your "personal" posts will still be welcomed and nothing is changing in that regard. The only restriction that will be placed on those types of posts will be simple grammar requirements. If you can write in coherent English, then you are fine and have no worry of anything.

Upper Management

I sent an email to all the moderators last night, "relieving them of duty" for two reasons. 1) The sites current traffic really doesn't call for that many moderators. But the most important reason is 2) I have been given a opportunity at a promotion which I really can't turn down. The downside is it requires a substantial amount of travel which will not allow me to focus as much on this site as I want. Rest assured, I have given the reigns over to elitecodex and MaeLou and they are two people I have known for a very long time. I trust them, and we have been in constant talks since its launch and we are all on the same page as far as where we need to go. elitecodex has been invisible lately, and I have been the public face of the site. He will start being the one taking the site forward and I believe they are going to do the best they can to make this a sustainable community.

Thank you for this update. English is not my first language, I do my best to avoid grammar errors and misspelled words, I hope to write good enough articles for the site. I enjoy this new community and I hope to be able to continue my guest.

Chantiele wrote on June 20, 2014, 12:06 PM

Thank you for the updates :)

momathome wrote on June 20, 2014, 12:17 PM

I'm glad to hear that the personal posts are not going to be affected by the changes. It was a concern on my mind, considering that is where my interest (both reading and writing) rest.

LynLomasi wrote on June 20, 2014, 12:34 PM

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear there will be more rules regarding the grammar. Congrats on your opportunity ashley and congrats to elitecodex and MaeLou . I'm sure they will do awesome. Looking forward to whatever's next. :)

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 12:59 PM

Your articles are great and we have seen no problem with them to date. Please remember that we have no intention of becoming grammar nazis or anything. We just want to make sure the content is coherent and meets a minimum standard for readability in English.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 12:59 PM

No problem :)

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 1:01 PM

Nope, personal posts are still welcomed and encouraged. We simply ask that personal posts can be understood by someone who understands English. Shouldn't be too hard right? ;)

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 1:04 PM

Thank you! I have full faith in them taking the site forward, and it will be a fun road ahead. I can't wait to login and see what is going on from time to time.

nbaquero wrote on June 20, 2014, 1:09 PM

Ashley
Understood, I've been a member of this site for a very short time, but I like the way it is managed and how the communication is handled on a very open way.

I wish you well in your new professional challenge, and to elitecodex and MaeLou thanks in advance for stepping up to the plate. I will support them in any way I can.

Thanks!

Congratulations on the new job. I think that you have made a wise decision in choosing two capable and well-spoken people to administer the site. I have no problem with producing content to specifications. Will we have a listing of suggested or needed topics?

CoralLevang wrote on June 20, 2014, 1:32 PM

Congratulations, , on many levels. New visions are not always as easy as they seem initially, but as you move forward, things will settle down and fall into place.

Promotions are great! Congratulations on yours!

SandraLynn wrote on June 20, 2014, 1:55 PM

YAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAY is sticking around and YAY YAY YAY for too :) And WooHOO for you, , Congrats on the promotion :) This all sounds like great upper management changes and I look forward to staying the course with them at the helm (I've got to figure you'll still be lurking? ;) )

Yah, AdSense. Maybe someday they'll figure out they goofed. Maybe not. Moving on. I'm still going to roll out the rest of MY AdSense saga, it has a positive ending ;)

Grammar/Personal Posts: Glad for the extra care on proper usage!!! Glad too that we can still share personal stuff. I tend toward that, but hope always to impart some sort of lesson along the way. My mistake(s) may be another's triumph? :)

For now, all good things. The site is new, bumps and curves in the road are to be expected. Silly not to think so. If we all just keep on keepin' on, we can grow well and good - together :) Please continue not to hesitate in asking us (your contributors) what we can do to help :)

LoudMan wrote on June 20, 2014, 3:46 PM

You gotta do what you gotta do.

Ruby3881 wrote on June 20, 2014, 3:50 PM

Congratulations on your promotion! And thanks for taking the time to update us. Do you mind if I ask whether Google gave a reason for the ban? I'm curious as to whether there are factors we can work on, so maybe you could reapply at some future point.

MaeLou wrote on June 20, 2014, 4:12 PM

From my understanding, no, they did not provide a reason.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 7:57 PM

Thank you nbaquero - you need not worry about the open communication going anywhere. Its something all three of us believe in.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 7:58 PM

In time, I am sure they will develop some but it may be free form? You suggest a topic that you know enough about and we create a category for it or something... not for everything though. Its hard to say now because it is so early, but they will keep you posted.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 8:01 PM

Thank you very much - I believe they will as well.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 8:05 PM

Thank you for the support - I certainly look forward to see where they take things. I am glad you are liking the site so far, and I hope it only gets better from here.

In all honesty, I don't think they care :) As bad as that sounds... maybe if we ever reach the top 10K at Alexa they will look at us again. We have a long way to go for that though.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 8:06 PM

Yep but it's OK because I feel confident that elitecodex and MaeLou can handle things without me.

ashley wrote on June 20, 2014, 8:07 PM

That's right, no reason... they say they can't provide information to "protect their proprietary detection algorithms" or something stupid along those lines. I still think its because we got too big too fast. I think if we grow to have quality content over another year, and the site becomes sustainable ( which is the final variable in all this ) then we can probably try again... maybe.

I don't know though... I have read some places once they disable your account you are practically banned for life. We'll have to wait and see though.

allen0187 wrote on June 21, 2014, 1:00 AM

Grats on the promotion and thanks for the updates!

edumate wrote on June 21, 2014, 2:27 AM

I am from India though I studied English as my first language it's not my mother tongue. I am with you and your team and would like to see the site develop and flourish in the near future. Wish you all the best! emoticon
Congrats on the promotion :)

Chito13 wrote on June 21, 2014, 5:17 AM

Heheh oh I am so happy to know that you are still accepting personal articles. Heheh. I can say that sometimes, I ran out of ideas, and that personal things that happen to me is such a great help in expressing my self in this online world. ;) GOD BLESS

AdrienneJenkins wrote on June 21, 2014, 10:16 AM

Ashley --- Have you also looked at Text Link Ads. I think Squidoo uses that as a steady income source.

AdrienneJenkins wrote on June 21, 2014, 10:20 AM

Ashley. I understand you have other responsibilities going forward but I think the team you have in place have awesome strengths. MaeLou is actively participating across the site on as many posts as possible. elitecodex is whipsmart as the techie brains. Your strength is that you've done a super duper fantastic job with transparency and open communication. I know that in itself is a lot of work on top of investigating ad revenue sources and all the kabillion details going on behind the scenes.

At the very least, would you consider being the daily voice or at least every other day voice of the website? It's what makes this site different. I understand you have to turn over the reins but can you still be the mouthpiece. You're good at it. Even if it means somedays all we get is a one word "hello". It has been soothing to read your updates.

Even on days when many of us haven't been able to post, I've come to read your updates and they are what make this site special besides all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Keep Persona Paper great and your voice alive.

MaeLou wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:08 AM

elitecodex and I have every intention of still being very transparent about what is going on with the site. I am sure that Ashley will still be around at times to check in, but we're hoping that between Will and I, that you'll like us just as much as you guys like Ashley.

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:17 AM

Thank you

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:26 AM

Thank you and I certainly hope for the same. Like I said before, while elitecodex has been practically invisible he has been a crucial part behind the scenes and I feel confident he can take over with no issues, and MaeLou is very active and a good at managing so it is a great combination going forward.

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:29 AM

Yep, personal posts will still be a staple going forward so don't worry about that. The idea is just to enhance it, but I'll let the new admins go into more detail :)

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:29 AM

Your welcome, openness and transparency was always a priority and that will not change with the new admins.

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:31 AM

We have signed up for an account with Kontera, which does sometimes put ads into the content of the website ( so if you see a brownish/orange double underline, thats a Kontera ad) but it doesn't seem to be working as nothing seems to be counting.

ashley wrote on June 21, 2014, 11:52 AM

Thank you for the feedback and I certainly think that going forward you will still receive those same updates, they will just be coming from elitecodex instead of myself. Rest assured, elitecodex and I launched this website with the same ideas and values so nothing will change with regard to that. I know that everyone has gotten to know me as the public face of the website, but I have full confidence that he will do just as good (if not better) going forward.

I'll still pop in from time to time and will be in contact with elitecodex and MaeLou about what is going on. Like I said, we launched this as a group effort so they are part of the reason for where we are now.

Juandicv wrote on June 21, 2014, 7:50 PM

well .. i guess ill just have to start checking up my grammar a bit better on future posts .. although i think the format and grammar of my current posts is not that bad :P

chatombreux wrote on June 21, 2014, 8:55 PM

Well, I wish you well in your promotion. Good things these days don't come easily, so if it's truly the best opportunity, you shouldn't pass it up. And, I fail to see what the fuss is over the grammar issue. You made it clear that if it's coherent, it's OK. You just want (or are aiming for) posts with more substance while still allowing the personal everyday kinds of posts. Another former site used to mandate that our posts be "discussions" and didn't want us to just post facts, but in fact to make the post "open ended" allowing for back and forth. Although they no longer exist as they once were, their concept of having a discussion isn't forgotten. I still tend to do that within my posts.

Laura-n-Sasha wrote on June 22, 2014, 10:43 AM

When I first started my website, I had clicked on my own ads in Google and got banned. But then I re-applied using a different name and email address and it worked out fine. You might want to have elitecodex and MaeLou try to get in with Google and mix up different email addresses to go with Google.

Thank you for your professionalism and transparency. I had left for a little while because of work, but now that things are getting into a groove, I am back. I understand about the job situation. It can be hard to do a professional job with a brand new writing website.

tshively wrote on June 22, 2014, 11:00 AM

Thank you so much for the update :)

inertia4 wrote on June 23, 2014, 2:51 PM

Don't feel bad. I had an AdSense account from Google and they banned me as well. They said I clicked my own content. Yeah right. I have heard many horror stories about Google AdSense. You are better off without them. There are many other ad sites like AdHitz. I like this site so far and I am just waiting for my approval from the admin. Every site has to start somewhere and there are always growing pains. I would love to see this site succeed.

NicoleL5822 wrote on June 24, 2014, 12:52 AM

Congrats on your promotion. I think your doing just fine and that's great passing it on because they seem to care as much as you do. Thanks!

MarshaMusselman wrote on June 27, 2014, 8:44 AM

I've heard of others having problems with Google adsense before, ashley . Although for many of them it's when they've tried to get it when joining other writing sites for places like hubpages and others. I've had Adsense on an Amazon account for so long that they don't give me any problems, but I'm not using it at the moment since I'm not writing anywhere that it's needed at present.

Congratulations on your promotion.

k_mccormick2 wrote on June 30, 2014, 1:10 PM

Congratulations on your promotion. I hope that you enjoy it :) I think that you have chosen people that are going to take this site and make it a great site to work on. I find that already my experiences have been great and I can't wait to post my first article on here. I am just trying to think of something that is worthwhile to post :)

midastouch wrote on July 12, 2014, 2:50 AM

Interesting

FreyaYuki wrote on July 24, 2014, 10:15 AM

I've very new to Persona Paper so I didn't know about any of this. Thanks for the updates. Sorry to hear about what happened to your Google AdSense account. Hope the site can reach the gold tier in Chitika ads then. Good luck with your promotion.

FreyaYuki wrote on July 24, 2014, 10:20 AM

This is really unfortunate and unfair. If the site didn't do anything wrong, then why should their AdSense account be banned? Isn't it possible to appeal to have your account reinstated? I think I read somewhere that this should be possible although there's only a slim chance that Google will listen to the appeal.

oldies909 wrote on September 29, 2014, 7:53 PM

Its a shame google is being so mean. Hope things workout better for the future of this site. Good luck!

UK_Writer wrote on January 21, 2015, 8:15 AM

It's been my aim, since I joined, to ditch the "I ate toast" style of posts that I would post on Bubblews and try to "up my game" so they're more in line with what I might write about on Hubpages, but shorter.
Every little helps, they say.

VinceSummers wrote on January 30, 2016, 2:32 PM

Frequently, Google AdSense pulls tricks like this. In fact, I'm certain it's because they are 1. Either unwilling to check to make sure they're correct, or 2. They feel you are making more money than they want to pay. Funny their stinking ad for J.Q. Public to use AdSense indicates some kind of super prosperity.
