Are Paid Tweets Spam?

Do you receive statements to your email account saying So-and-So tweeted? Of course, these are intended to act as suggestions you read that particular tweet. While we might call this "promotion", is it not also paying to have spams sent to the people? Is there not a thin line here? What do you think?
I already receive a ton of junk mail, so it doesn't matter that much to me. You see, I openly use my email address for the purpose of communication with those who are sincere. I don't try to hide my email address. Still, I don't crave the stuff. And I don't visit those "so-and-so" tweets. Do you, in all honesty?

I don't think they are all paid for. For instance there are a couple of people who post here occasionally who also have their own websites and tweet to remind us of their articles. I only tweet occasionally and would be glad that twitter reminds followers that I have posted a new tweet.

"would be"? In other words, Twitter says nothing concerning you. And, I "don't think" they are all paid for? Well, maybe you are right. But I'm not as positive as you are that that is the case.

I ignore mine most of the time. I get so many thousands of email that it boggles the mind. No time for them mostly. I use Facebook to get updates but spend most of my time on YouTube. And notifications of the latest YouTube uploads are in excess of 100 +

I actually hate twitter. I have tried several times to like it and I just cant. I especially hate those notifications, if someone posts something surely it appears on my feed? Why do I need notifications for that? I only want notifications for replies, messages that sort of thing. It used to be a fabulous promotion tool and I used to put up with it then but it really isn't as good now so I rarely bother with it

I'm beginning to think you are right...
