What is Your Version of Chef's Surprise?

Well, I have come up with a few recipes. How do I do that? I try to think of what ingredients naturally go together. Frankly, I never combine

  1. Fish and Tomato
  2. Vegetables and Nuts (e.g. Green Beans and Almonds)
  3. Potatoes and Tomatoes

Mom's Chef's Surprise was a combination of Elbow Macaroni, Hamburger, and Tomato Sauce.

MY first, and simplest Chef's Surprise was a mix of Mashed Potatoes and Eggs, stirred in a tiny skillet. Served with salt and pepper. Not much, I grant you. But easy. Hey! I AM a guy, after all.

So what is your rendition of Chef's Surprise? Please let us know. We're waiting in suspense! C'mon.

Ah, well my chef's surprise DID combine fish and tomato. I got a great recipe for bolognese sauce from and tried it out. It was lovely. In fact so nice, that I took to creating the soffrito (the carrot, celery and tomato) by itself and using it with meatballs. There was some sauce left over, so I decided to try it with fish. There was frozen fish in the freezer and I part defrosted it, then put it in a dish with the soffrito and cooked in the oven until tender and soft (tested with a fork). Totally delicious!

I think the idea of combination with meatballs sounds great!

Mashed Taters with whole kernel corn in a sandwich. Sliced olives on cream cheese slices on an onion bagel. Peanutbutter spread over a hot buttermilk pancake. Burger made with jalapeno and cheddar cheese and avocado slices on a ciabatta bun. all good and of course, plenty of onion.

Let's see. Old guy, how are you still alive? Mwa-ha-ha-ha. I do LOVE the idea of the sliced olives on cream cheese on onion bagel. I'd probably simplify and buy the cream cheese with the olives in it, but your idea is better. Although I might be tempted to use "everything" bagels.
