Ever Frozen Your Tongue to a Spoon?

When I was young (how many decades ago?) I once went to the freezer, opened a box of ice cream (probably Breyers), dug a spoon deep inside, and put the spoon on my tongue.

Was I shocked! I couldn't take it off! It's funny what can scare you, isn't it?

I was scared. It would be years before I discovered how this can happen. The memory of what happened "stuck" with me and sticks with me to this day.

Would you like to know the simple science behind what caused the spoon to stick?

Check it out: QuirkyScience "Tongue Stuck" article.

Hint: It has something to do with the material the spoon was made of. It's not as likely to occur today for reasons that should become obvious to the reader.

Yes, it's definitely scary. I saw a photo of a child with his tongue stuck to a lamppost last winter. I think it can cause an ice burn.

I watched movie where these teens were stuck in an air lift, gondola, in the ski resort after they shut down for the season and one person woke up to find their hands frozen to the rails. It was a horrific movie.
