Playing Word Games

Children's Games Like I Spy

Lots of children enjoy playing these games, such as "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with 'T". They are great for their observation and learning the sounds of the letters. One of my grandchildren also plays a variation on this, which is good for younger children, which is "I spy something with the colour "blue"," etc. It's easier for children who have not yet learned the alphabet.

I know a Country that starts with ....

She also plays a variation on the lines of "I know a country / animal / plant that starts with A/B/C... etc." We were playing that one today while we walked to and from the park. "I know a country that starts with "I" (or i, as in "is", if the child is learning sounds by phonics). We went through Italy and Ireland before i gave up to be told it was "Iceland"!.

A plant that starts with "CH"

So we came to the plant ones, "I know a plant that starts with "ch". I couldn't guess this one, only to be told it was "Chulip" (Tulip), well that's what it sounds like I suppose!

That is a good exercise for older children or parents to teach younger ones. I played this game myself. Now, I would like to add my 2 cents worth. I Spy a candidate that sounds like Dump. Just kidding.

Chaotic daisy, now that's one I didn't think of. Would like to see that one.

Actually this sounds like clever and educational fun that costs no money to play. Ordinarily, I'd say "That can't be good." But I must confess, I intend to play with my grandkids.

How about "Chickens, Mother Cary's."

That's a plant I don't know.

I Spy is a game we played in the car as children on long trips. The variations for colour, etc help younger children play too. It is educational and fun.

Maybe it's because it doesn't exist. I got confused. There's Mother Carey's Chickens, but the plant is Hens 'n' Chicks. Sigh...

Lol, I seem to remember reading The Water Babies MANY years ago and Mother Carey's Chickens MAY have been mentioned in that. I think they were sea birds.
