Who Stole The Money?
Wanted To Repay A Loan
My daughter wanted to repay a loan she had from me. She had been saving the money up in a drawer in an upstairs chest, though I didn't know that. When she got home from work, she called me upstairs. She was pale. "Who has been upstairs?" she asked. "Was the front door open? The money is gone."
The Drawers Had Been Open
I told her that the drawers had all been open when I came in to look after the children, while she and her husband went to work. She had already gone when I arrived, just her husband looking after the children until I arrived. I had closed the drawers as part of tidying up and thought no more of it. She found one crumpled note lying on the floor, where I had not seen it and asked me to call her husband upstairs.
He Was In The Kitchen
He was starting to get the tea ready when I found him. His jaw dropped when I quietly told him the money was gone and he dashed upstairs to talk to his wife. I couldn't understand what had happened. Nobody had been in the house while I was there and the children hadn't been upstairs either.
A Quiet Voice
A quiet little voice came from the four-year old. "I know where it is Granny." I almost dismissed it. "It's in my spiderman bag." She had been wearing the bag over her pyjamas when I came in that morning and I had hung it on a high hook to get her dressed, which was where it stayed the rest of the day. I took it down and handed it to her, thinking she hadn't understand what had been said, until she unzipped the bag and crumpled bank notes came out! Mummy and daddy came running when we called them.
Apart from the crumpled note left up in the bedroom, the money was all there.
New Hiding Place
I certainly hope they find a new hiding place for any savings - such as the bank!
