Abscess

Swollen Face and Aching Tooth

I had to go to the dentist today for an emergency appointment. Apparently, I have an abscess. No wonder my cheek is swollen and I am smiling lop-sidedly!

Back Tooth

It's a back tooth at the top. The pain is not "killing" me, as I havn't had to take painkillers but it is giving my family a fright seeing my face look like that.

Selfie

I thought I would take a "selfie" of it to prove just how bad it was, but the camera on my tablet is not great and the picture is so grainy. it looks more like I am suffering from spottyitis than toothache. emoticon  That's even despite today being a beautiful bright, sunny day, which is amazing for February.

Antibiotics

The dentist has given me 2 different antibiotics (I haven't taken any for years and years). I asked if it would go away by itself but she looked worried and said it could make me feel very ill very quickly. OK, I don't want to end up in hospital with septicaemia! She also said not to take them on an empty stomach because they are very strong.

Not Very Hungry

I have to admit I don't feel very hungry at the minute, which is unusual for me. But my husband is making scrambled egg and we have home made vegetable soup tonight, so those should be easy enough to eat.

Try pudding. No, not the British idea of pudding, but the American idea - a cornstarch based paste that is most often served as vanilla, chocolate, or butterscotch. BTW, have you noticed PP is now a "ghost town?" Those who want to make it a pay-to-join site would have a small audience, to say the least.

Abscesses are painful I have had only two in my fifty one years of living. They are horrible.

My mother used to make what she called "white sauce" from cornstarch, sugar and milk. I loved it. What is "pudding" made up with?

This is the first one I have ever had.

Most of us make it from a boxed mix. The cook variety is best, but, sadly, many have moved to "instant." Instant chemically hardens. Here's a from-scratch procedure for chocolate pudding: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-chocolate-pudding-from-scratch-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-195012

These swellings make mountaions of a mole hill. Not serious really. Antibiotics will set you right but your Dentist must then check for any infection which she needs to attend to.

That looks delightful and very easy to make. I am hungry now! But is that supposed to help with an abscess?

I have an infected gum above a missing upper tooth. I bit into some hot chicken wings the other night and have since been taking Minocycline antibiotic once every 6 hours and rinsing my mouth 2 times daily with a prescription anti-microbial oral rinse. I had to take an aspirin then had to take a Nexium for the stomach acid caused by the aspirin. the swelling has gone down a bit and I still need to keep at it. When you are missing teeth it's painful to bite on hard foods and yes I will eventually get dentures but not until the rest of 'em are gone. I hate going to a dentist. More than the pain of a tooth ache.

I generally don't bother with antibiotics so I asked the dentist if it would heal itself. She looked worried and said that it could get a lot worse very quickly. So I am taking the antibiotics.

My husband doesn't mind going to the dentist but he only has about 4 teeth left. A number of them were lost playing rugby!

Negative outcome .... Not good!

Hope it feels better soon. You need the meds, infected teeth can be dangerous

Thanks. It is still swollen, even after 24 hours on the antibiotics. I am washing my mouth with a salt water solution, which seems to help.
