Could Doctor McDreamy Still Be Alive On Grey's Anatomy? Or Is This Wishful Thinking?

Recently I have noticed a quite a lot of chatter on Twitter regarding Derek Shepherd and whether there is any truth to the rumors that the character is still alive and will appear sometime in Season 12. I find this difficult to believe, however I would not put anything past Ms Shonda Rhimes. Could his death be a terrible dream that Meredith had in Season 11 or could it be the beginning of Meredith losing her mind to the awful disease her mother had.
Many fans believe this is true, but my question is; if Derek is going to appear in Season 12, it has to happen soon, as he only had a contract until the end of Season 12, therefore, could this also be a lie? While I was never a shipper of Mer/Der, I would be thrilled for the fans who want this to happen. I have to ask however, can this be done in a believable and realistic way. I don't see a lot on Shonda's Twitter page about Grey's Anatomy, she seems to be more wrapped up with Scandal and her recent book release. The book, by the way is called the Year of Yes and one critic, the wonderful Stella McCartney has called it a must read, so I better be getting myself I copy I think.
A recent poll on Twitter shows that almost 80% of fans believe McDreamy is still alive. That's quite a convincing figure. It makes me certainly stop and think. When I first heard about this, I was almost tempted to dismiss it totally, but I cannot do that now, having seen how strongly some of the fans believe in this scenario. For their sake, I really hope it is true.
If it is true, then it is absolutely mind blowing how well this secret has been kept. Many cast and crew involved with the show would know what going on and to not have this leak is truly astonishing. Anyway Grey's fans, I guess time will tell. Stay tuned.

I don't actually watch the show, because I didn't get ABC back when it started, and I didn't want to join in midway (I binge-watched LOST from the beginning on DVD), but I do enjoy watching How to Get Away with Murder. Shonda Rimes has some amazing shows!
