Movie Review: Gentlemen Bronocs

I happened to be watching a Family Guy Star Wars DVD when I saw an add for a movie called Gentlemen Broncos. The movie looked interesting. It was made by the people who made Napoleon Dynamite, a movie I wasn't really a fan of. I happened to be in a Dollar Tree store the other day, and Gentlemen Broncos was on sale for a dollar. I figured it was worth a buck to see if it was any good.

After reading reviews, my expectations were set low. This movie clearly had no budget and had a B Movie feel that I think was intentional. A home schooled boy and aspiring writer gets to go to a writer's camp. There, a science fiction author, who happens to be his hero, is doing one of the seminars. You get to see what a pompous jerk this kid's hero really is. Actually, the movie has several quirky characters as you might expect from the people who made this movie.

The kid wrote his own science fiction book, and you get to see some scenes acted out as he envisions it. The boy sells the filming rights to a low budget movie maker, and you see what a terrible job he does in making the movie. Then, the story really gets a makeover. The boy's hero has hopes of getting another book published, but he finds out that his book has been rejected.

After throwing a fit, the man notices the boy's book, which has been entered in the writing contest at the camp. He sees potential, but only if he can make a few adjustments and change the names. When you see his visions of the book acted out, you can't help but chuckle. What's going to happen now that the boy's book has been stolen? I can't give away all the secrets.

This was not a great movie. It's mediocre at best. Some have suggested that this movie was made in the hopes of it becoming a cult classic 15 years from now. Who knows? I liked it enough to give it a passing grade. The DVD has a few extras, including a "making of" documentary, director’s commentary and deleted scenes. I won't suggest that you go out and buy it, but if you see it like I did for a dollar, why not?

I am not familiar with this movie yet but it seems the story is an interesting one. Hope I can avail a copy of that.

I don't know this title. I looked it up and it came out in 2009. Director Jared Hess never successfully followed up Napoleon Dynamite.
