Virtual Reality, is it here to stay?
Have you heard of the new virtual reality technology that is coming out? Is it anything to get excited about?
One of the things I have been following online is the development of new virtual reality equipment. Back in the late 80's and early 90's they had by then already coined the term "virtual reality" but all attempts of creating something that people actually wanted to use failed.
It is now 2015 going on 2016 and virtual reality has been reborn. It is no longer a flat screen in front of your face but an advanced piece of technology that is worn and can transport you to other worlds. Within a few years the next generation of headsets will launch for gaming platforms. Imagine being able to actually sit in a room and talk to your kids that live many miles away just by buying one of these headsets. Or "walking on mars" NASA has actually created a exact replica of mars that you see through these headsets.
So what do you think? Excited or pass? Here to stay or just another fad? I have attached a YouTube video of if you would like to see the current models in action.

This is something we must be really careful with. Some of the comments at the end of the video point towards the possibility of people becoming hooked on such false reality - especially children - and this is a real danger. Who would want to live their life in a tiny room wearing one of these? Living a life which isn't real isn't my idea of progress but i can see precisely that happening as this technology gets more and more like real life to the point where we can't tell the difference.

I agree, but the more people wanted to use it the more it would cost to use and the more it costed the more people would have to work a job to keep playing and the more they work the less time they would have to play. So I don't think it will ever become too big a problem. Plus think of the possibilities for education! Being able to walk the streets of ancient Rome or traversing Mars. I think this could be a great tool for many people.

I just saw a commercial last night on TV that put the phone in a contraption to wear/view movies. I am guessing this is along the lines of what you are talking about.

I think virtual reality is here to stay, but I don't think it will become as ubiquitous as some other technologies such as tablets and smartphones.

I think it is exciting and I would like to try it one day before I die. It is amazing to think about how technology has advanced in these days.
