Mixed Media Collage: Song of the Sea

I loved tonight's Meetup. (For those who do not know what a "Meetup" is, I suggest you go to meetup.com. I am involved in several Meetup groups, but tonight is one that is called "Creative Circle of Women." It is the brainchild of Nadine Hamil, owner of Artful Dreamers Studio in Tacoma, Washington.

On the last Friday of each month, we get together and work on a project. It is designed to allow us to "play" and create again, many of us having had that part of life stifled many years ago.

Tonight we were given wooden cigar boxes. The rest was up to us.

This image was taken and owned by the author. This image was taken and owned by the author.

Nadine had trays and tables filled with paints, papers, odds 'n' ends, found objects, and so much more.

I started by painting the box an aqua green. Then the inside of the top, I decoupaged some sheet music. On the inside of the bottom, I used burlap. Then bits of paper, and shells, a pin, beads, paper, a piece of glass, and this cool mermaid I found on one of the tables. One of the other women gave me a sand dollar. A little hot glue to hold things in place, and it came to life.

I am not quite finished with it yet. I have some sand that I am going to mix with some Modge Podge and paint over the outside of the box to give it some texture, and I think I have a few more "treasures" I might include sometime in the future.

I truly find myself enjoying this mixed media collage, as I have been exploring art with Nadine. This is the second MM Collage I have created, and of all the things I have done with art projects, they are the two things that I have walked out saying, "I really love her."

I am kicking around a name--"Song of the Sea"--but am open to other ideas from all of you. I find this piece to be rather whimsical, and I see the mermaid as full of joy.

I think that I am going to make several of these types of things and see what else I can create with some of the found objects I have collected over the years, before I throw them out in the sorting process.

Perhaps, I could sell something like this on Etsy/Ebay, as I start to get better at it?

Your MM collage with the mermaid is really outstanding and shows your creativity. I really think you would be able to sell a lot of these on Etsy/Ebay and make more money than writing for PP.

Thank you, Paulie. I really am having fun with this medium.

You did a good job on this. It has a nice folk art feel to it.

CoralLevang wrote on September 26, 2015, 10:09 AM

Thank you for saying that...I LOVE folk art. emoticon

Looks very good if I wanted more knick knacks to dust I would buy it.

How about 'Under the Sea" from I think "The Little Mermaid". Did your group play leader ever teach a college art class. This is like a project I did during teacher ed program for we had to take an Art and Crafts course that would integrate the arts into the classroom.

I think your collage is wonderful and "Song of the Sea" is the perfect title. I was actually listening to a song about the sea while I read this post (talk about coincidence) and it was the perfect background music for your creation.

CoralLevang wrote on September 26, 2015, 10:52 AM

Your comment made me smile re: listening to song about the sea. Thanks, DW.

CoralLevang wrote on September 26, 2015, 10:57 AM

Using sheet music as a background for the rest is how I chose the Song element, and not the Under element. I do not know if she taught college. I don't think so. I know she has studied with some Intuitive Arts teachers around the country.

Wow! I followed the link you gave and it provided a whole list of meetups near me. I didn't realise anything like that existed, never mind here in Northern Ireland. Song of the Sea sounds just right as a title.

The cool thing about Meetup.com is it puts people together. What we used to do by going to the library or looking in the newspaper, or finding through coffee shops, etc., we now do online. The cool thing about it is that if we are traveling, it is a way to find like-minded people in other areas. I have been in a social group for quite some time now. Although not extremely active, I have been on hikes, been zip-lining, had people to spend holidays with, game nights, etc. I just joined Creative Circle of Women about 4 months ago, when Nadine started it. I had taken a couple of classes before that. She had just moved here from New Jersey and wanted to get people in her studio, so Meetup was a great way to do it. She has now gotten people to start taking classes because of it.

A little dust would just make it more organic. emoticon :winking: Thank you for the compliment!

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 26, 2015, 11:51 AM

I followed the link as saw several meetups in my area, but none are really up my alley. I am thinking of starting a group for NaNoWriMo participants in the area. I'll have to bring it up with a few of my colleagues I know are planning to participate.

CoralLevang wrote on September 26, 2015, 12:05 PM

As people and interests change, meetup groups do, as well. I think NaNoWriMo is a good one!

I have also shared the link and your article on Facebook. Also on Tsu http://www.tsu.co/meglearner/81430003

That is pretty cute. I plan to get back into my mixed media stuff soon. I've been busy getting photography stuff together for an even next month lately.

Very creative and fun, glad you are rediscovering your latent talent!

CoralLevang wrote on September 27, 2015, 5:24 PM

this has been a lot of fun...the MM, I mean.

CoralLevang wrote on September 27, 2015, 5:24 PM

Thank you!

CoralLevang wrote on September 27, 2015, 5:26 PM

It's the fun part that I am beginning to like...and when I went through the bin and I found her (the mermaid), I think I might have giggled like a little girl. I knew she was mine.

Feisty56 wrote on September 27, 2015, 6:19 PM

I think these would make unique gifts to give, particularly to girls and young women. I can see my granddaughters of various ages -- from age 5 to age 20 -- loving one of these, especially if it spoke to a particular interest/theme/emotion.

CoralLevang wrote on September 27, 2015, 7:21 PM

Let me know. Give me some colors and themes and ages, and let me see what I could come up with.

butchiepoo wrote on September 28, 2015, 3:58 PM

You did an outstanding job on the cigar box. Wow the mermaid really sets it up nice. It sounds as though you really had a lot of fun doing it too.

AliCanary wrote on September 28, 2015, 4:09 PM

You could totally sell this on Etsy. Not eBay. This is exactly the kind of thing that Etsy was created for. I would price it somewhere between $50-$100. Get it absolutely finished before you list it, though, because people will make immediate online payment with PayPal, and you will want to be able to ship it out quickly.

AliCanary wrote on September 28, 2015, 4:13 PM

Do be aware that there are costs associated with starting your own meetup group, and it's a pretty high annual expense (over $100). That said, I do love meetup.com, and I belong to half a dozen groups, myself!

CoralLevang wrote on September 28, 2015, 5:28 PM

AliCanary Coming from you, an artist, I so appreciate this comment. Thank you. I am fighting the self-doubt question, "Really???" But I accept and honor your words to me. Thank you for the ideas.

BarbRad wrote on September 28, 2015, 7:03 PM

Sounds like you had a good time. I wish I had more time to create with more than words.

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 28, 2015, 8:47 PM

Had not realized the cost involved was so high. Perhaps I'll rethink that idea.

AliCanary wrote on September 28, 2015, 10:00 PM

What you can do for free is create a Facebook group for all your writer friends. Everyone can participate, no matter where they are, but the local ones can also meet. It's your one-stop shop to schedule events and have discussions.

AliCanary wrote on September 28, 2015, 10:04 PM

I like your title, too. It's good to give things titles, because it makes them more like a real piece of art. I know you were inspired by the sheet music, but don't forget the very strong tradition of mermaids (sirens) and singing!

CoralLevang wrote on September 29, 2015, 1:37 PM

I have talked to several people who have started up Meetup groups and some of them have spent nothing. They are looking at it as just a way to get together for like-minded people. It does not have to cost anything. All depends on what you do or want to do. Do not give up the ideas without checking into things first.

How did I miss these pictures!? I'm slacking. This is really good. I love it, it shows your creativity really well. And I love that color!

cmoneyspinner wrote on October 9, 2015, 8:43 PM

Yeah you should try to sell because Amazon just created a new category called "Handmade" and Etsy might be teaming up with Amazon to sell products. (If they haven't already. Think I heard a rumor recently.)

CoralLevang wrote on October 9, 2015, 9:22 PM

Thank you, butchiepoo . It was so much fun, yes!

CoralLevang wrote on October 9, 2015, 9:24 PM

BarbRad I did have a grand time. I have made time for this once a month group. I am sad that I won't likely be attending one in October. :( and November will not likely go, because of holidays. I hope that isn't the case though. I have to check the group page to see the dates.

CoralLevang wrote on October 9, 2015, 9:25 PM

Thank, lexiconlover . I really loved doing this. I'm going to get busy on some of these boxes. I have six more. I also have some candles to make. Not the candles but the outside. Will put those pictures up once I get back from TX and FL.

CoralLevang wrote on October 9, 2015, 9:26 PM

Thank you, cmoneyspinner ! I will check into it when I return!
