Loyal to a smaller business.

This is a category I haven't posted in before now, well at least to the best of my knowledge I haven't.

I live in a coastal fishing town. There is very little to do here unless your drinking, fishing or part of the military. Okay I kid, there is plenty to do, but those are three of the most popular. We are a military town after all.

Fishing is one of my passions, I haven't done much this year and there are a multitude of reasons for that- none of which are really important for this article. Anyway, this being a town where fishing is booming- we have more than our fair share of bait and tackle shops. Which I have been to all of them.

However, there is one that if given the chance I will go to over all the others. Why? It's not because it's big. It's actually kind of small- but it's well stocked and I know the guy who owns it.

I have bought all my "big" equipment from his store and from him. He's a fisherman, who loves fishing and knows what he's talking about. I've known him for a couple years, and everytime I go into the store- I feel more comfortable shopping at his store then going to one of the other bigger ones, or going to WalMart.

And there's a good chance that if he doesn't have it- he can and will order it for the customer.

I do shop at WalMart, but I like supporting a independent business and someone that I know.

Shopping at a local small business can be a pleasant experience. I once wanted to establish a business cleaning businesses, but stinking chains had it sewn up tight. The big outfits don't like dealing with the small guy. Frankly, big businesses are not often a good thing. The one or ones who make the huge bucks strip it all away from their multitude of underlings. Whereas a small business doesn't do that. If they have a couple of workers, at least half those working get to divvy up the money, if you see what I mean.

Being a small business man myself a la my publishing label, I try to give my trade to other local businesses when I can.

Some of it probably comes from me knowing the owner as well. Although I do try to support as many small businesses in town as I can.
