A Question for Bloggers

We all know that SEO is important when blogging. My blog is up and running, but I really need to do some SEO work on it. There are plugins for this on Wordpress. I use one, but they don't choose your keywords for you. My question: Is it necessary to purchase keywords/ads from Google in order to get high ranking on SEO? Do you purchase them for your blog? Or, can you get high ranking by doing your own keyword research like in the old days.
I know that social media is important for getting high ranking and I do that part, but I don't want to pay for keywords that I have to bid on or any keywords for that matter. I would appreciate any help I can get on this.

Unfortunately, I am not adept at all of this, so I just write on my blog and hope like hell someone reads it. LOL

I never understood all the purchasing so, I like CoralLevang just write what I want to and hope people find it.

I personally do not. There are some free keyword tools that you can use. Until my blogs bring in enough to make up for extra costs I guess I might be just doing that work on my own. Maybe as I build my blogs up I will start investing in other tools similar to that.

Based on the amount my blogs bring in (at this point $0.00) I would never consider paying for keywords/SEO. I use Google's Keyword Planner and auto complete. Using those aids, some of my HubPages articles rank fairly high for relevant keywords.

I assume those who pay are bumped ahead of those who don't regardless of your keywords. Social media is probably our best bet.

I'm aware of the free keyword tools. I was just wondering if we don't have a chance unless we pay.

It's all very confusing to me, too.

I think that's what I'll do and see what happens.

I just use my own tags. That seems to attract a handful or two of readers. Speaking of blogs I should probably go update mine here soon. I'd like to bring in some income from my blog some day but I don't have the time to do so right now.

I wish I can give you the answer. But this is also something that confuses me

It's good to know I'm not the only one.

SEO seems so Byzantine and capricious to me as which words might drive traffic one day may produce nothing the next. I suppose there are always a few keywords that will drive traffic to your blog such as - FREE, NEW, IMPROVED, KARDASHIAN, SEX, NAKED, OBAMACARE and the like. For instance, if I were to write a blog hinting that the administrators of OBAMACARE were going to launch a NEW ad campaign featuring a NAKED KARDASHIAN talking about how the plan has been IMPROVED to cover for FREE diseases contracted while engaging in unsafe SEX it would probably do very well, SEO wise.
