Our new home

I haven't been here for a long time. In the last couple of months I have been very busy offline. My husband and I have two houses at the moment. We are renovating our house on the island and we are going to put it up for sale in the future. We have rented a very cheap house and we live in that house at the moment. The house that we have rented used to belong to an old man who was ill. The house and the garden have been neglected for many years, and it will take us a lot of time and money to fix everything.
We have removed the wallpaper in the living room and we are repairing the walls at the moment. The kitchen and the bathroom are very old, and some of the things need to be repaired or replaced but we can't afford that at the moment. We are going to renovate one room at a time and we hope to buy this house when we have sold our house on the island. Right now we have to spend our money on our house on the island. That house is almost 100 years old, and the basement is not a pretty sight. The walls are very ugly and there is a hole in one of them. The basement has never been renovated. The original high level toilet still exists and there is a very, very old pantry. My brother will repair the hole in the basement wall, the staircase etc. We have already talked to a real estate agent, and she will come back when we have renovated the house. She is pretty optimistic. The house isn't perfect, but the location is great. The beach and the shops are within walking distance and the area is beautiful.
Most of our things are still in boxes, but when we finish the first room in the new house (the living room) we
will be able to unpack some of the boxes. I look forward to that. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but we
are happy to get away from the house where the neighbours were driving us crazy. It is wonderful that we don't
have to listen to their constant arguments and their loud music.

In the U.S., some have made a mistake in buying a new house before selling the old one. Two mortgages are the result. I hope this doesn't happen to you...

Fortunately we are able to rent our current house. We want to buy it, but we have to sell the other house first. We couldn't afford two mortgages. I just hope that we will be able to sell the house on the island relatively quickly.

In the U.S., rental is about the same amount of money as a mortgage. It wasn't always so, but renters figured they could charge as much, since a person would probably buy if they had sufficient down payment for a house. If they did not they would rent. So rents went up to the equivalent of mortgages. GREED PREVAILED.

Good to see you after a long time. Welcome back.
You have a lot on your hands but it is exciting to see a job well done. Hope you will get a good price for your house that will be on sale.

Yes, I enjoy the new place. It is a nice area and the neighbours are very friendly. We will be very happy when we our house on the island gets sold.

Thanks
I am happy to be back. We have chosen to renovate the house before we sell it, and we hope that we will be able to increase the price that way. The house is old, and we need to replace and repair many things before we sell the house.

Welcome back! SO good to read from you again. I hope that things go exactly as you have planned. It sounds as if you are happier, despite the work ahead.

Thank you
It feels great to be back. Yes, I am happier now. We are very busy, but it is really nice that we have found another place to live.

I didn't know that. In Denmark it is usually cheaper to rent a house.

I've really missed you here--glad you're back! I'd be a little reticent to renovate I house that I was only renting, unless I had some sort of rent-to-own contract. Good luck to you!

Quite true--our first house, which was three bedrooms, cost us less per month than our two-bedroom apartment had cost to rent (and THAT apartment was $200 LESS per month than the one-bedroom we had in Philadelphia!) Housing is the highest living expense an American has, which is why there are so many homeless people. The crazy part is that there are so many empty homes, too!

I am happy to be back. I really hope that we will get a good price. The real estate agent will come back when we have renovated the house and we are going to discuss the price.

I am very happy to be back and I look forward to reading some of posts that I have missed. We have started to renovate the house we are renting, but we are not going make any huge and really expensive changes as long as we are renting. When our house on the Island gets sold we want to buy the house that we are renting.
