What are the Qualities of the Earth Element?

Earth is the first of the classical elements (earth, air, fire, and water) as most people list them today. It is often perceived of as the most solid and unmoving of the four elements, and is associated with the physical body and the physical world around us. It is important to distinguish between Earth as one of the planets and other celestial bodies in astrology, and the element of earth.

Aristotle described earth as dry and cold, with dryness dominating. “Dry” referred to its property of solidity, of holding its shape on its own. “Cold” referred to the ability of this element to bring different qualities together in a mixture and hold them that way. By contrast, Aristotle saw heat as a force that separated substances into their various components.

Earth is associated with the ground beneath us, with the five physical senses , and with the flora and fauna of Creation. It is thus the element of fertility, prosperity, and physical health. It has come to be seen as the element connected with both monetary wealth and healing.

Symbols of Earth

The symbol of earth in Western mysticism is the downward pointing triangle with a horizontal line going through it. In the East, the Tattva for earth is a yellow square. Plato associated the element of earth with a solid cube, which my gaming friends will recognize as a d6.

The colour often associated with earth is the green of the grass, trees, and the plants that feed us. In the Tarot, earth corresponds to the suit of Pentacles, Coins, or Deniers. In astrology, the earth signs are: Taurus, the Bull; Virgo, the Virgin; Capricorn, the Goat.

Characteristics of the Earth Signs

People born to earth signs are known for being practical, prosaic, and logical. Their temperament was referred to as melancholic, from the Greek name for the black bile Hippocrates associated with the earth element. A melancholy person was described as analytical and quiet.

People who fall under the earth sign influence are both materialistic and reliable. This tends to stoke their ambition to do well in their careers, which ultimately brings them the security and creature comforts they crave.

Because of their dependable nature and their ability to get the job done, they are often well respected and are considered mentors by some. Personal relationships may be somewhat of a challenge, however, as they are not keen on taking risks and don't always know how to share their feelings. They can also be both stubborn and possessive of people they hold dear.

This earth sign sounds rather low key. Earthy as it were.

My husband is Capricorn. Solid and unmoving would describe him. Not that he is unmoving, he is very active but he likes things to be done at regular intervals, meals to be at set times, etc.

Ya think? emoticon
Yup, and we probably get those understandings from the classical associations of the element.

I was waiting for a comment like that! I'm glad you made it emoticon
There are a few reasons that someone doesn't sound much like the description of their sign:
1) They were born at or near the cusp (the transition between two signs.) Sometimes a person born on the cusp is mistakenly told they belong to the wrong sign, but being born on the cusp generally means they have some characteristics of both signs.
2) Most of us tend to be perceived by others in terms of our rising sign or ascendant, rather than our sun sign. The ascendant is more the persona we show the world, while the sun sign is more our true self.
3) Because we are also perceived by the kinds of things we speak of (Mercury) if this planet is in the same sign as the sun it tends to reinforce the perception of the person as belonging to their sun sign. But when Mercury is in one of the two adjacent signs, the perception will be very different. If a person is born with Sun in Capricorn, Mercury can be in Sagittarius or in Aquarius. Both of these would look very different from Mercury in Capricorn.

It's also just important to remember that a natal chart is so much more than a sun sign. Our personalities are impacted by ten celestial bodies moving through twelve signs and twelve houses. The amount of data in a natal chart is, pardon the pun, simply astronomical! In some cases one or more of those other planets is going to have a much greater influence than the sun sign.

My Dad is a Capricorn. He's very solid and reliable, and likes his routine. He's done a lot of the same things - like getting up before Mom and drinking coffee while watching/reading/listening to the news - the same way for decades.

Were you born around April or May 20th? If so, you were born on a cusp. If the former, you'll have a lot of traits of Aries (fire.) If the latter, you'd be a mix of Taurus and Gemini (air.) It's also possible that these two elements have a strong expression through other planets in your chart. I'll try to discuss chart rulers and signatures in later posts, so hopefully that will help make things clearer for you emoticon

Oh no, please don't feel foolish! Most folks are completely unaware of this stuff, so it's natural not to know there's more to a "horoscope." ("Natal chart" or "birth chart" is more accurate when talking about someone's overall personality.)

I expected that few people would know about all the other planets and such. It will come up in future posts, but I'm really glad you gave me the opportunity to do a quick preview emoticon
