This spring and summer we've been lucky enough to have a pair of swallows build a nest above our front door.

Both me and my husband, (and our cat) have found them fascinating to watch. First we watched them for two week as they flew back and forwards making their nest from river mud and straw, it really is a work of art. Next came laying the eggs, 5 we know as we had a spy with our camera when mum was away.

Now we are watching the babies grow bigger, there are 3 of them we think. the nest is high up so we have to use a small camcorder on a stick to look, so it's hard to tell. From the ground all we can see is their little beaks.

In the next week though they will of course get bigger, until they eventually fledge and leave us.

We think it's too late in the year for a second brood, so I'm guessing we won't then see them again until next year, when hopefully they will return.

Fascinating! We had blue tits nesting in a box fixed to the side of our garden shed for four of the past five years. I removed the box earlier this year because it was in a poor condition but I intend to replace it next spring and maybe leave room for a wi-fi camera to spy on them. That should be interesting watching the youngsters grow.

I'd definitely leave space for a camera if you can, they're lovely to watch. I might see if over the winter my husband can add something to the porch for a camera, in the hope the swallows come back.

I have always loved swallows. They are fascinating birds to watch. You are blessed to have your swallow experience. Hope they come back next year.
