Transfagarasan- The Most Spectacular Mountain Road I Have Seen

It may not be the highest road in the world and not even in Romania, as it is the second in height after Transalpina, but it undoubtedly represents one of the most scenic routes in the entire world. A journey on the Transfagarasan highway, the road built in the seventies across the stunning Fagaras Mountains, is an unforgettable experience that I finally went through last summer.

After leaving the town of Curtea de Arges and crossing over dense forests and the impressive Vidraru Dam, my trip took me to the most beautiful part of this extraordinary road. As it leaves the forest behind and it climbs higher and higher, the winding road makes a strong impression on everyone. It is full of hairpin turns and dizzying heights which require extreme caution from the drivers, and the beauty of the mountain landscape is almost indescribable.

It is great if you have enough time to explore this fabulous road. Luckily for me the group in which I was made several stops on the way to the highest point, which is situated at 2034 m, where you will find a chalet and the impressive Balea Lake. Thus, I had plenty of opportunities to fill my lungs with the chilly, but fresh mountain air and to admire the great view of the Transfagarasan making its way among alpine meadows and amazing waterfalls.

The Transfagarasan is a fabulous road which can only be explored for a few months a year, so you better hurry up and come to it before it is closed in late autumn. The combination between the wonderful mountain scenery and the ingenuity of humans who buily this amazing road will surely make you feel speechless!

Sometimes Americans have preconceived notions of beauty. This beauty is clearly of a simple sort -- the best kind of beauty.

Beauty has different shapes and meanings for each individual, but I'm sure even those Americans with preconceived notions in their minds would find the Transfagarasan road simply awesome!

Yes, we have a wonderful country and I think we should try to describe its treasures as often if we want to make people from other countries see Romania in a more positive manner!
