You Can't See This Killer at the Beach ...

By Gloria Faye Brown Bates/aka Granny Gee

There's more to kill you at the beaches this year. Not only can sharks bite, eat you ... there's something you can't see that can get you! That's right. I was reading about it on myFoxla.com.

It's called Vibrio vulnificus ... a rare bacteria that is in the saltwater in some of Florida's beaches. It thrives in warm water. If you have open wounds ... you can get it when exposed to the warm water where it's at.

Not only can you get infected at the beach, you can be infected when you eat raw shellfish. Gracious. I read the symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, and stomach pain. It can be deadly.

I read 2 people have been killed by it, and 7 people infected. This is something I want to research more. Not that I'm going into the warm waters at the beach!

This is the time of year that if there are dangers to people ... we should all spread the word. It could save someone's life. My last experience broke me of going in the water at the beach! I'll have to write about it. I'll call it 'Shark!' So, I should be safe from both ... no can go back in the waters!

A couple years ago it was flesh eating bacteria in the water. There should be signs posted at the vulnerable beaches.

Ugh. I do like the painting, though. Are you the artist?

I read about this. It is very scary to think about. We are not planning to go to the beach this summer, which is good.

I do want to go to the ocean at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I want to go to where my son died on the sand there. I just feel the need to. I haven't been yet. I would go only ankle-deep ... I haven't forgotten being bumped hard by the shark in the water!

I have never liked to swim in the ocean, but I don't much enjoy being in the water anyway.

The only water I like to play in is in a clear swimming pool. :)

I love the paintings. I love visiting the sea, but I don't get in the water.
