I Misread a Name

Some time ago, when a certain Kanye West burst onto the scene, I misread his name in an online article as K-a-y-n-e. This moment of dyslexia planted the name in my mind, and it was only when I heard his name on television some time later, and checked online, that I realised I had made an error. Personally, I can’t abide the obnoxious fellow, and I couldn’t even name one of his songs.

So what is the point of this post?

Well, since my faux pas I have taken to calling people with the name Wayne ‘Wan-ye’, much to the irritation of the two customers who carry that monicker regularly into the bar where I work. Maybe I’m asking for trouble in winding them up like this and casting the first stone, for as Batman (alias Bruce Wan-ye) says:

“People who stay in glass hotels shouldn't throw parties.”

Boy! That guy came out with some doozies.

I have an old school friend who loves Batman and is no fan of Kanye. I'm trying to imagine the look on his face, should he hear you pronounce "Bruce Wanye!"

I too have mis-read names too and worse, mis-pronounce -- sometimes deliberately, sometimes because the 'other' has got stuck in my mind -- them even after knowing the right pronunciation.
