Keeping Cool in the Summer

The strong winds of the past few days appear to have abated, and there’s finally some nice weather out there. It’s time to dust off the big green fan that will blow welcome cool air onto my partner and me, as we bake in the summer heat.
On those swelteringly warm summer nights, we stand the fan on a shelf above the television at the foot of our bed. It oscilates all night long, but it is basically just moving the warm air around; it doesn’t really cool us down. We tried placing a plastic bottle of ice in front of the fan in an attempt to chill the air, but this didn’t work. Still, at least it has some effect.
Do you have any tips for staying cool on those warm nights?
Photo is my own - air cooling equipment? I’m a big fan.

I used to have a fan attached to the main light in my lounge when I lived in a top floor apartment. The heat up there was pretty intense at times. Now I just sleep on top of the duvet and irritate my husband by reading the phone until I fall asleep. I do it all the time but he only finds it a problem when there's no duvet to dim the light.

On hot nights I just have my window open, but when it's too hot I have my fan on to, but sometimes that doesn't even help which is a pain, but that's not often

I live in the American South. We turn the air conditioner thermostat down to sixty five.
