How Regularly Do You Fill Your Tank?

I’ve never been one of these motorists who fills the tank regularly – I run on almost empty most of the time, and the lower half of my face is tanned due to constant exposure to the low fuel warning light. I know that managing my fuel in this manner is probably detrimental to the car’s performance, but old habits die hard. Indeed, I actually ran out of fuel twice last year.

I recently embarked on a long journey, however, and for this occasion I filled up. Such was the outbreak of celebration, I recorded the event on my camera. The photo is a little blurred, but you can clearly see that the fuel gauge pointer is right over there, almost at bursting point.

I set off on my journey, but my vehicle was so unused to carrying such a heavy fuel load, I had to stop every few miles for it to take a toilet break.

How do you manage your fuel?

When it gets down to a quarter of a tank left. Another factor is knowing your driving plans and filling up accordingly. If you are taking a trip then you have to fill up.

I usually go for somewhere in the middle, i dont like it too empty or i panic, but I rarely have the money to fill it either. If I am going away anywhere I always stick an extra £20 in it which depending on how much I have at the time, sometimes makes it nearly full and when the prices were really cheap a few months ago I was putting any spare cash I had in it and keeping it pretty full to take advantage of the low prices, but in general I would say I sit between a quater and a half a tank.

I run it down pretty low, usually when there it is sitting just above the E mark.

Same as you. We have a diesel that only gets used for journeys over 30 miles, so it doesn't get filled up much. Last time my husband filled it was when he went to Europe with friends last month. The time before that was the trip he and I made over there at Easter. I swear moths fly out of the tank when we open the filler cap.

I try to fill the tank once it gets to half or below. I have heard that the car runs better that way and there are fewer problems with the fuel tank.
