I Love the ACM Awards

Sitting here watching the ACM awards and I just love them. I'd say they are my favorite awards show. Sure it doesn't hurt that one of my favorites, Luke Bryan, is the host, but it's more than that.

I think I like that the show is just about the music. They have the best artists on to sing the best songs and 90% of the show is just that. They don't show awards for dozens of awards that nobody cares about. They dont' have someone that nobody has heard of come up and give a 5 minute speech that nobody can follow. It's simply celebrating the music and the artists.

Tonight's show has been good once again. The highlight had to be Taylor Swift's mom giving her the milestone award. IT was just announced that her mom was battling cancer so it was emotional. The only moment that topped that was the surprise appearance (in the audience) by Randy Travis who has been very sick for well over a year. There were times that the country music family thought they had lost him, so to see him live and in person was uplifting.

I wish more awards shows spent time honoring their art than trying to sell advertisements. Well done ACMs.

We never watch any of the award shows anymore, we actually used to watch the Oscars, Emmy's and Daytime Emmy's when we first got marry (almost 30 years ago), but just got tired of them.

All of the reviews I read said the show was horrible. I didn't watch. I won't watch those shows until they either stop calling it what it is not -- country music (I always say that stands for "ain't country music"), or they actually show country music on the show. Ask yourself why Steven Tyler is on an alleged country show, when you never see Alan Jackson on a rock show, and you'll understand my reasons for boycotting.

I'm not someone who cares to put labels on music. If I like it I like it and people can call it country, rock, bee-bop or whatever.
For what it's worth, Alan Jackon sang "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning" last night and it was phenomenal.

Duke Ellington famously said there's only two kinds of music: good and bad. If, however, one is going to put genre labels on songs, they SHOULD be accurate. This stuff isn't country, and they're insulting the intelligence of everyone who's ever heard country music by claiming that it is. As the late Charlie Louvin once said, "I don't know why they're calling my 'old-timey' or 'old music' when I'm still just country. If they want a new term (for the music), let them put it on THEIR music." No rock fan would stand by and let them claim AC/DC and the Jonas Brothers are the same music. Why people who LOATHE country music want to redefine a genre to suit their personal tastes is beyond me.

The ACM awards were really nice this time. I was surprised to see Randy Travis, but I was not surprised to see Taylor's mom. I don't care for Taylor and so I was not impressed with her speech. I think that Luke and Blake done a good job with the show.
