Now and Then
Spring is most definitely here . After nearly a solid week of rain, the last two days have dawned warm and sunny. The grass went, overnight, from shades of greenish tan to emerald, and there are signs of life in my flower bed. Liverwort, sedum, tansy, and columbine are all up and thriving and even the mums, whose ability to over-winter is always suspect, are putting up new shoots.
Sitting here, in a rare hour of peace and quiet, thinking about this life I'm living, a memory of older, crazier, days came back to me.
Before I lived here, I lived in a tiny apartment built above someone's garage. Just inside the door was a little shelf with three pegs below it. On one of those pegs I kept Sneakers' blue leash and, on another, my keys (car, apartment, office) on a blue lanyard. Are you seeing a catastrophe in the making?
One morning I was rushing around trying to get out the door and on my way to work. Finally I was satisfied that I was ready to go. I had my tote with some paperwork in it, my lunch, even my travel mug of coffee - all set. If I hurried, I wouldn't even be late! My left hand reached automatically for my keys even as my right was opening the door, turning the lock, and closing it behind me. I hurried down the steps to my car, tossed my tote on the passenger seat and slid behind the wheel.
It wasn't until that moment that I realized that, no matter what day the calendar said it was, it was really Monday. Because I was trying to start the car, not with the ignition key, but Sneakers' leash!
