Customer Service is NOT Easy.

To anyone who says working in Customer Service must be so easy, because I sit at a desk and take calls and work on the computer, I would like to tell you otherwise.

If I had to choose between working at a call center and working retail or at a restaurant, I would choose call center. I would rather deal with angry customers over the phone than face to face. This doesn't necessarily make the work any easier, though. Yes, I like sitting at my desk and taking calls. I like that I don't have to see these people in person, and at the end of the day they are just another customer to me. But the work is still stressful... at times rewarding, but 75% of the time stressful.

I would say I am good at my job, but it doesn't mean I'm feeling happy-go-lucky every hour of my shift. My moods can shift so quickly in the span of my 8 hour shift. I try not to let the nasty, rude customers' attitudes get to me, but sometimes those calls come back-to-back and it can really take its toll. I have strangers constantly telling me I'm doing poorly at my job, simply because I'm following the rules and can't do x, y, z for them. I secretly wish to tell these people that it is all their error, for not reading before signing a contract, etc, but of course I can't. I have bills to pay and need to keep my job.

No customer service is NOT easy, some customers want everything right away.

customer service representative here as well! :) yes, it is definitely NOT easy. It's just sad because here in the Philippines,. when you say you work in a call center, you are almost always looked down to.

I have worked in library before, so I can really understand the pain of serving customers face-to-face.

I've worked various aspects of customer service through the years and I certainly can sympathize. The customer is not always right, and often quite awful about it when they are not. I admit a few times I have gotten angry when making customer service calls, but generally when I felt I was just getting a run-around (wanting to cancel a service I was under no obligation to keep, and having someone repeatedly try to get me to keep the service instead of just letting me cancel it already. I guess it's part of the script they had to follow, but still.)

I am sure it is stressful, I have made my share of calls to customer service center and I will admit sometimes I can be one of those irate, rude callers you wrote about.

I am sure it is not easy,, which makes me feel all the more guilty for being so rude to a customer service guy one time when I got screwed over with the cell phone I purchased over the phone. (long story)

And many customers think that yelling at me or telling me to hurry up/that I'm not being a good rep, is going to make me want to pull all the stops for them. Pshhh.

Hey fellow CS rep! :) Sorry to hear about that :( My parents are Filipino and when customers tell me how they don't want to speak to a non-American CS rep, it really irritates me >.> It's so rude!

I can definitely understand your perspective, I admit myself I get irritated when calling customer service departments sometimes... but like you said it's when I feel I'm just getting a run around!

I'm pretty sure every one of us has been "that customer"... I understand people can have a bad day and just need to take it out on someone. I understand both perspectives. :)

We've all been that person/customer!! And it's not always the customer's fault. I admit there's been times where I was in a bad mood myself and didn't care about the customers :/
