Woman punished for WhatsApp message
Be careful what you say on WhatsApp, it could get you in trouble especially if you are in Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday a woman was sentenced to receive 70 lashes by a Saudi Court for sending a so called insulting message to a man. She was also fined 20,000 in Saudi currency. The woman was found guilty of "tarnishing the reputation" of a man by what she said on the WhatsApp, according to a report from Gulf news.
The details are sketchy at best, but according to a report by Gulf news, the woman and the man had an argument and she supposedly insulted him. The nature of the insult is not known. There is actually a law in Saudi Arabia that makes it illegal to defame someone or cause them harm through the use of tech devices. The penalties are stiff and could result in huge fines and up to a year in prison. No word on if the men suffer the same fate if they did the same thing, but I seriously doubt it. Could you imagine how clogged the courts would be here in the West if there was such a law?
