Basics of Anime

I've seen some posts about people doing the category challenge and saying they would like to know more about anime. However, anime has the common misconception of "they are japanese cartoons, and therefore must be for kids".

I would like to start by dispelling that misconception. Anime is like TV in general. There are the cutesy cartoons that are meant for kids. There are the drama shows, the romance series, the action/adventure types. Then there are the violent shows (some gory, some just bloody), the psychological thrillers, and other more adult content.

I would encourage anyone to try it out, as there is so much variety that, unless someone dislikes animation itself, there is bound to be something there to catch someone's attention. However, the opposite is also true. There is bound to be something that will make you never want to speak of it again. So if you decide to watch a series, look it up first to see what genres are associated with it.

I will be making a few more posts on the subject, along with some suggestions (and descriptions so if you decide to start watching, you'll know what you are getting into).

I too disagree that anime is for kids. Some are downright adults only!

I have a student who likes something called FAIRYTALE. She did a presentation on it.

I actually enjoy Fairy Tail greatly. It's one of the series me and my husband are following at the moment. It became a lot more than just "good guys vs bad guys" as you learn why some of them turned out the way they did. I hope the presentation was good!

Some are, yes, but some are fine for kids. I grew up on Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon and a few more. It's the overall generalization that can be dangerous though.

I completely agree. Am an anime fan too and there are so many different kinds and genres out there so it's not all just for children. It caters to everyone, people of all ages.

I used to think that Anime was for children also, how wrong I was!

Is anime just animated movies/serial with a typical style of drawing?

I adore anime! I own so many different ones from many different genres. I started with Sailor Moon and DBZ and worked my way up. Great article!

I would imagine that this, like any other genre, has its good and bad.
