Gardening as an Alternative Exercise

Exercise is good for the body, that is for sure but believe it or not, there are people who really do not love to exercise. They find exercising too straining for them and they opt to stick on daily routines of doing nothing. Exercising is one of the most important ways to keep our body healthy. This has been the mantra of all health conscious people from all walks of life. And this is something we should not take for granted. When we exercise, we strengthen our bones, muscles and heart. We also burn off extra fat, improve balance, regulate body’s metabolism, the process that turns the nutrients in food into energy and heat. Exercising also improves our mood.

Most kids nowadays do not get enough exercise because they become addicted to online games and watching too much television for almost whole day. There are other alternative exercises we can even indulge our kids as well. We can always find a workout that is fun for the family. Aside from organized sports, we can work out with them through encouraging them to play with other kids, doing aerobics with the help of taped exercises, skipping rope or simple stretches. We can also burn calories by gardening at home, raking leaves, folding a laundry or vacuuming the house. We can do all of these with our kids.

There should be a subject on gardening in schools so that kids get interested in this noble activity.

I jumped on the elliptical for the first time in weeks yesterday, but then I was sent into a coughing fit, due to this lingering cough. I definitely need to find an alternative until my cough clears up.

There are many different ways to exercise, i find it hard to believe that people cannot find a way to exercise that they enjoy. I for one love to walk and do yoga. My son on the other hand likes to light weights and dance. Dancing is exercise. Gardening is a great way to get out in the frehs air as well as get the exercise you need.

Anything that gets your body moving can be considered as exercise. Doing household chores like cleaning the house or doing the laundry can be considered exercise. With gardening, you do not only develop yourself but you develop the Earth around you.

Hi cheri I agree that gardening is great for the body in more ways than one. Like you get fresh air and sunshine as well as a workout digging and weeding, then you get the benefits of fresh fruits and veggies. My son hates to get dirty (yeah I know, I also find it strange that in my geology class where we are going to get good and dirty, there is only one boy in there). However, as much as my son loves video games, if the weather permits he does go outside and run around the neighborhood with his friend, so I am glad to see he isn't just laying around and not getting the fresh air and exercise he needs.

I consider walking the most comfortable and cheapest way to exercise. I also try climbing the stairs at home.

In that case I can say that I have been doing a lot of exercise already 24/7! I do not need to add another one.

I believe so too. There are a lot of things to do to keep us moving which can be considered exercise.

It feels good to get dirty if you are happy and enjoying what you are doing as well. I love gardening because other than the exercise, the growing plants can de stress you as well.

Our schools here encourage children to learn about plants, but we do not have space for a garden as most of us live in high rise apartment.

I agree and can't wait to start gardening again. Right now we are buried under 5 inches of snow and it's still falling..Of course now would be a good time to start some seeds inside..:-)
