New Article Image Wizard is Active

Hey everyone, I am writing a quick post just to let everyone know I just installed the updated image wizard. So now you should be able to start playing with it. It has completed the internal testing phase and now let you use it to see if I overlooked anything. If you find any bugs or issues, please let me know and I will work on them ASAP.

You can simply respond to this article with any bugs or issues you find, and I'll look into them tonight. That is really the only major change to the site at the moment. You can find some screenshots and a preview announcement here:

Edit: I have included a quick screenshot of the button that you should be clicking in order to activate the image wizard.

I'm not able to attach an image. The image wizard seems to be dead, not allowing me to do anything.

Kasman wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:12 PM

elitecodex - it isn't working. The new image part on the right is unresponsive

GemstonePink wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:16 PM

Well, it is not working now, but I am sure it will soon. Thanks again for this new thing to play with!

valmnz wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:21 PM

Okay, I've managed to insert an image into my article, but it's not showing in the place where our articles are listed in our profile. Help please! I'm a slow learner.

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:21 PM

What are you seeing when you click that button? Do you get a dialog? Try clearing your cache and see if that helps.

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:22 PM

Can you tell me which article you tried it on?

UK_Writer wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:23 PM

Cheers - this should save me some time emoticon  I'll check it out next time I create a new, genius, post :)

My latest called Why Do Weeds Grow Faster than Plants?

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:23 PM

Hmmm... thats not good when it works on my end. Can you tell me what its doing when you click on the button?

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:24 PM

I just checked that one - you actually inserted an image from your user gallery. On the right side, you should see "Article Image". That is where you set the actual article image. The user gallery is for images in the article itself.

valmnz wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:26 PM

Thanks, that what I tried first. That's the one that isn't working for me. Nothing ha[ppens. I tried our two old computers and my newish tablet. Sorry to be a nuisance.

valmnz wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:29 PM

All I'm getting is the words Article Image and beneath that a grey box that definitely isn't alive. How do you clear your cache?

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:35 PM

In most browsers you can use Ctrl + Shift + Delete and you can clear your cache like that. Just remember that you may need to log back in.

valmnz wrote on February 23, 2015, 3:52 PM

Well, I cleared the cache, restarted the computer, managed to kill off all manner of things in the process, but now I'm back to where I started emoticon  it just aint going to work for me, sorry.

MaeLou wrote on February 23, 2015, 4:07 PM

I'm sure we will get it working for you! What browser do you use?

valmnz wrote on February 23, 2015, 4:13 PM

I'm using Firefox. Two of the computers use Windows 7 and one uses Windows 8. I'm going to walk away and enjoy my beautiful New Zealand sunshine, and come back later. Thanks emoticon

sounds an interesting gadget for us to play with - cheers elitecodex

UK_Writer wrote on February 23, 2015, 4:25 PM

[1] I can't see the button at all. Windows XP/Chrome
[2] I edited an older post and it's lost the image and image credit now

MaeLou wrote on February 23, 2015, 4:25 PM

It's currently not working, so it's something we have to fix this evening! Stay tuned folks! We apologize!

Kasman wrote on February 23, 2015, 4:54 PM

elitecodex - I don't even have the button! Clearing the cache hasn't worked. I see the words 'Article Image' on the right-hand side but nothing else below them. I have Windows Vista and my browser is Chrome.

I believe I found the issue... can you try again when you get a chance?

elitecodex wrote on February 23, 2015, 5:11 PM

Sorry about that... I believe it should be working now. Try again.

I tried for the article image A window opens with just flkr, pixabay and our own but not wikipedia commons. Also once the upload is complete the window does not disappear and the image does not get lodged.
How to insert multiple images?

paperdaisyflower7 wrote on February 23, 2015, 7:41 PM

well not sure about the wizard as long as we can still put pictures I'll get around the that later

buzymommy wrote on February 23, 2015, 8:22 PM

I edited a post, and when I saved it, the image changed to be the image I just uploaded for my most recent article.... strange!

BarbRad wrote on February 23, 2015, 11:16 PM

I discovered the new photo uploader when I published my last article. It seems that we can now search for and upload photos from Flickr or Pixabay, as well as our own for the introductory photo. But this is, I think, still in the developing stages, since I wasn't successful in being able to upload my own this way. So I have no introductory photo in the usual place, although to be sure I did have the photo I wanted, I put it in the gallery, too, and used it from there as the first photo.

@MaeLou and elitecodex may want to know that after I chose my photo with “your own” selected, I was able to select the file and upload to bring up the message to give my credit. I put my credit in. But there was no way to save this after I did it, even when I clicked upload again, since that was the only button there. I went through the process again and just closed the form the second time. When I published, the photo did not appear. So it appears there should be some sort of save button or a way to know that we've done everything right. Some instructions and a confirmation would be great when you have the final version ready. The article where I tried all this is . I was going to publish this as a separate article but then I looked to see if you'd announced it and so I didn't publish.

UK_Writer wrote on February 24, 2015, 3:05 AM

I am struggling with this this morning. Before you wrote this post I had a post with an image and attribution. Last night I made a small edit to that and the image disappeared.

This morning I opened the post to add in the image again and I could see the button and chose the image off my PC, added the attribution, then submitted it - but the image is not showing up. The persona default image is showing.

I'm new to the site so at the moment - everything is new for me!

elitecodex wrote on February 24, 2015, 8:26 AM

The image wizard isn't for embedded images in your posts, you still need to use the old method to do that through the user gallery. The image wizard is simply for setting your article image, the main image that "represents" your article.

Right now all you can search through is pixabay and we are working on flickr integration which is why that option is there.

elitecodex wrote on February 24, 2015, 8:29 AM

So you tried to upload an image twice, and it didn't take? After the image is uploaded, it should show a thumbnail on the right side of the screen. Did you see that after the upload finished the first time? Did you see the "uploading" message after you entered your image credit details?

elitecodex wrote on February 24, 2015, 8:30 AM

So the image worked fine, but when you went to go edit it then the image disappeared? I will try to replicate the problem today... but it makes sense. If you edit a post, and re-select the image does it work?

That isn't the intended purpose of the wizard but if I can narrow down the bug I can definitely fix it. Thanks for letting me know!

bestwriter wrote on February 24, 2015, 8:41 AM

I know that the image wizard is not for embedded images. I uploaded and after the upload is complete the window should disappear and the image should appear. It does not.

elitecodex wrote on February 24, 2015, 9:13 AM

Which post did you try this on?

Thanks for the update. It seems that there are some issues with this new feature. I hope it gets sorted out soon.

AliCanary wrote on February 24, 2015, 4:19 PM

It's not fixed. I tried to go back in just now and re-add the image I couldn't add yesterday, and it does the exact same thing:
1. I click add image, and it gives me three options: Pixabay, Flickr, or my own. The picture I want to use is from Wikimedia Commons, so the only choice is to click "my own", I suppose.
2. I click Browse and select the image from my Pictures file, where I saved it. The file name appears beside the Browse button.
3. I then click Upload and a box appears to put my picture credit. I insert the credit from the page with all the use details, just as in MaeLou 's article about proper credits. I click OK.
4. Nothing happens.
5. I try again; nothing happens. I try Drag and Drop. Does not work.
6. I get very sad. I publish without a picture. I hate that.

Windows 8.1, Firefox

Here's the link to my sad, pictureless article.
Please help, because I am about to submit a LOT of articles that require Wiki Commons pics.

MaeLou wrote on February 24, 2015, 5:24 PM

Hmm, it seems to work when I type "my own" - could you try to edit and just put "Wikimedia Commons" just to see if it goes through. You can add the link to the bottom of your article for now. I'm just curious if it's not taking it due to a link.

Nar2Reviews wrote on February 24, 2015, 9:23 PM

Oh, thats handy to know - thanks. I will have to check it out.

AliCanary wrote on February 25, 2015, 12:49 PM

I wondered that, too. Just now tried the "my own" thing, but it didn't work. I honestly think that portal is just not working correctly. The picture never appears in the viewing area, and drag and drop doesn't work, either.

MaeLou wrote on February 25, 2015, 12:56 PM

Hmm, I've seen others recently use wikimedia as their source. elitecodex is going to have to look into it since it's working for some, but not others.

AliCanary wrote on February 25, 2015, 3:55 PM

I get that! Because I tried to just use a generic Pixabay image for my last post, but it didn't work, either. The search function worked ( I entered the term and saw the pictures) and the select function worked (I selected a pic and it appeared in a pop-up), but I clicked "Use Image", nothing whatsoever happened. It just stayed there until I finally gave up and closed it. I can still use the Gallery feature, but I want the banner image! My articles look very dull on the front page and on my profile page without it.

Also, just an aside--I would really like the option of just going to Pixabay and getting an image, if I want, because there can be hundreds of good ones available, but only a couple dozen come up on the search function.

AliCanary wrote on February 25, 2015, 7:21 PM

Oh, yay--I cleared my browser cache and it is working now! So happy emoticon

Carmelanirel wrote on February 26, 2015, 10:25 AM

Thanks, it was quite easy and for someone who really hasn't been here for a couple weeks, that is saying a lot!

GayleStorm wrote on February 28, 2015, 9:19 PM

What's the trick to getting multiple photos in a post? I feel like I'm missing something.

AudreyHowitt wrote on March 30, 2015, 8:15 PM

Thank you!! This is so much easier!!
