Vandals Smash Almost Every Window in Historic Carn Brea Castle Restaurant

Vandals have broken nearly every window in the historic Carn Brea Castle restaurant near Redruth in Cornwall, England. The restaurant is owned and run by the parents and family of well known TV presenter Nadia Sawalha. A total of 47 windows had rocks thrown through them.

Carn Brea Castle was built in 1379 as a chapel, but by the 18th century it was being used as a hunting lodge by the local Bassett family. An old lease from 1898 stipulated that the tenant had to keep a light shining in the north facing window as anavigational aid and warning to ships.

Built on huge boulders, Carn Brea Castle has been a listed building since 1975 and a restaurant since the mid 1980s when the Sawalha family started serving middle eastern cuisine. I have eaten in the restaurant in the past - it's very small and quirky!

Let's hope the police can catch these mindless idiots. This is not only an eye-catching curiosity on the skyline, but a long-standing local family business that jobs rely on.

You just can't understand the mindset of such folk. Let's hope they're caught but as we all know their punishment will be slight.

Wow! Calling them idiots is still too kind. Hopefully, they serve time and made to pay for the repair of the windows although, I guess, the old charm of those windows can't be replaced.

It makes you wonder what goes through the head of yobs doesn't it? I hope they are caught.

They just had to be on drugs which made them insane in their actions! Waste,waste,waste-no eyes to see beauty...

My grandmother comes from near here...my son now owns her old home...often walked around this place...nice views from there..

In light of present events it sounds like some sort of hate crime. But besides this not only destroying historical property whoever did this should be given the maximum sentence. Have any other recent events like this occurred in that area?

Some people have no respect for our history.

Yes, I blame the parents. It's a lovely building, it's tiny - it's a folly.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 12:03 PM

I'd make them pay for the windows to be replaced, then order them to lick the exterior clean ... that'd keep them out of trouble for years.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 12:04 PM

I hope so too. The locals will find out who did it and grass them up. Nobody wants this type of scum out there in the area, doing god knows what next. Better to grass them up and get them removed.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 12:04 PM

Yes. Probably drugs. Or general neediness and lack of backbone. 1-2 windows would be "normal" for vandalism, it must have taken them ages.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 12:05 PM

Yes, nice views - bit blowy though most days. It's nice your son now owns your old grandmother's house, I assume he knew it had been hers when he bought it.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 12:06 PM

It won't be a hate crime. It'll just be random vandals. Not everything that isn't white/English is a hate crime. This will be pure and simple idiots with some spare time

That's the sadness. The building's been there for nearly 700 years in one form or another. It's small, starting off as a chapel, then being used as a hunting lodge by local landowners. It's folly sized. I'd recommend it if anybody's in the area. You can see it on the skyline when you drive along the main A30 road.

This makes me sad to read about this. Why some people have so little regard for others and their property is beyond my understanding.

Ellis wrote on February 19, 2015, 3:50 PM

It has been passed down through the family...

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 4:32 PM

They should be painted bright pink and strung up ... right after they've licked the building clean with their tongues.

UK_Writer wrote on February 19, 2015, 4:33 PM

Well, it's difficult to create things when you're sitting without access to money, skills, or opportunities, or space. But there's no excuse for damaging property, or business, or the lives of others.

Oh, UK_Writer ! You definitely think like I do. LOL

We have been thinking of going down to Cornwall for a break, so if we do get there shall put Redruth on the itinerary.

I love old historic castles! This one is no exception. Those throwing rocks must be mindless kids but to get all the windows is quite a task!
