An Overnight Escape to Wellington, New Zealand

My husband and I lived in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, for many years and it is still a place close to my heart. We now live only a two hour drive away, so I return there often. The call of the city has been haunting me for a couple of months now and I've tried to ignore it, convincing myself the money is better sitting in my long term travel fund.

Today I finally gave in and have booked a night's accommodation for early next week. I go down on my own two or three times a year, as my husband isn't as active as he once was and he doesn't always the same things as I enjoy. I will be staying at one of my two favourite hotels and, if I'm lucky the view from my hotel room will be very similar to the one shown above. If not, the view from the rooms at the back of the hotel also have an interesting outlook.

I'm rather looking forward to the short break, driving down on Monday and returning Tuesday afternoon. Taking my car means I can stop and explore a little more widely than I could if I went down by train. The city will no doubt be busy, as there's a World Cup cricket match there later next week.

I'm looking forward to being back in Wellington again, even if just for an overnight stay. I'm hoping to get a few small things done while there, otherwise my time will be my own.

'Staycations' are all the rage here in Manila. People are tired of long travels and would rather find a nice hotel right in the heart of the city and spend a weekend there. I've done it myself and it is quite relaxing.

As this is only two hours away, it's pretty much like a staycation. Where I live is so small I couldn't justify the expense of a hotel room so close to home emoticon

Oh I would love to be there too but it would take longer than overnight just go get there. I have done staycations here in Alberta, but we have no ocean.

When I stay at this hotel I am right on the waterfront and enjoy just walking and soaking it all in.

The office where my daughter works in Auckland overlooks the harbor and she enjoys the magnificent view. I even enjoy the view even on just the photos she posts on FB and those which I see on Google Earth. I'm sure the view would be more fascinating when we actually see them next month hopefully. Some friends of my daughters live and work in Wellington..

Your daughter is very lucky. Auckland is a wonderful place, but my heart lies in Wellington emoticon  I do hope you get the chance to go there on your trip.

Do you have any family or friends in Wellington to visit or would you just be with nature?

Sometimes I visit friends, sometimes, such as this coming visit, I just like to be on my own and absorb the vibes of Wellington

We all need to do this. Many a time our own thoughts turn out to be better companions.

My daughters have already prepared an itinerary for our visit and I do hope Wellington is included. It's just a short 2-week visit though because of them are working and, besides, my wife cannot be away for long because she takes care of my mother-in-law (checking on everyday and running all the errands to buy all the things needed in the house and to pay the utility bills).

Have a great weekend, Ms. Val, and oh - "Happy Valentines day"!
