Waitangi Day Public Holiday in New Zealand

Today, 6 February, is an important day here in New Zealand. It is Waitangi Day, considered as our National Day, commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February, 1840. This founding document of our country was signed between representatives of Queen Victoria and the British Crown and over 500 chiefs representing the Māori people, the original inhabitants of this country. Waitangi Day has only been celebrated as a national holiday since 1974. Currently celebrations are under way up at Waitangi in the north, where the treaty was signed. Thousands flock there every year. Elsewhere throughout the country minor celebrations take place, mainly in the form of family days celebrating our nation. This year is especially important, in that it is 175 years since the treaty was signed. Compared with where many of you live, we are a very young nation. But I am definitely proud to be a New Zealander. .#NewZealand

We had some exposure to Maori culture when visiting that country. There was a welcome ceremony that we attended. It was unique and different.

We are lucky to have a culture that other nationalities find interesting. We kind of take it for granted here.

There is much more than just culture there. What about those hot springs, the pastures running into miles and miles with sheep grazing. I cannot forget the simulated Antarctic experience and ofcourse the Milford Sound.

I hope to write plenty about our wonderful country and have in fact just written a short piece on Lake Taupo.
