A new 'Angel of the North'

When 21 year old Katie Cutler heard of a vulnerable pensioner being attacked and mugged outside his own home in Gateshead on Tyneside she decided to help.

The victim, 67 year old Alan Barnes, who is 4ft 6ins and visually impaired, suffered a broken collarbone when he was attacked and pushed to the ground. His attacker demanded money and rifled through Alan’s pockets before running off when Alan began shouting for help.

Katie, who didn’t know Alan, set up a fundraising page hoping to raise £500 to give to him. However, way beyond her wildest dreams pledged donations are now approaching £300,000 and Alan, who was too distressed by the attack to return to his home, is planning to move and buy a new house.

A story to warm the cockles of your heart (now let’s hope the police catch the cowardly thug responsible).

Wow, he could buy a mansion with that amount of money in the north. How anyone can attack a defenseless pensioner is beyond me, someone of that age wouldn´t take a lot of persuading to give every penny he had on him to thugs, it sickens me to hear about things like this. What a kind hearted girl came to his rescue. I hope it helps him get over his attack eventually. BTW, I wrote about thugs getting their just desserts the other week, if you fancy a read, you will see that they really did and I couldn´t have been more chuffed to hear about it.

Reassuring story - at least the latter part. And a bit more heart-warming than the guy who, on a crowdsourcing site to get money for pizza or something, ended up with several thousand... unless of course that one was an urban {why not rural?] legend. BTW I was going to ask about the image, but took a tiny bit of initiative and looked it up. Pretty impressive... though I imagine there must have been {as the Fizzhead Emperor likes to term them} "naysayers"...

The image is the 'Angel of the North', the Anthony Gormley (marmite - you either like it or hate it) 'Geordie' landmark. I'll do a post on it another day.

It gets slightly better. Someone is trying to start a fund for the girl who started the fund but she's steadfastly refusing it. I shall drop by and read your thugs!

Such stories should appear in the News more often instead of the usual bad news that we are sick of reading.

I certainly agree with you on that one. Life isn't all doom and gloom.

That is wonderful, I hope they catch the cowards soon but also hope they know how much this helped the person they attacked.

That is wonderful. There are still good and kind people in the world. I wish we heard more about them.

The story is all over the media, particularly locally, so 'they' will know and with everyone sharing a disgust for what happened I'm sure they'll be caught.

An act of kindness from a stranger and a young one too. She appeared on TV with the victim and was moved to tears over what her appeal had achieved.

I've been following this tale since seeing it on our local news - heartwarming.

NorthernLight wrote on February 4, 2015, 2:42 PM

It is indeed and the latest news is that they've asked to stop further donations now the total has reached £329,000.

This is such a heartwarming story. Thank you for sharing it. It shows me that there really are good folks in this world.

Thanks, you're right. And when the local news showed the two meeting for the first time, the girl with tears in her eyes and overwhelmed by what she had done, it really brought a lump to the throat.
PS - the police have caught the low life mugger.

CoralLevang wrote on February 18, 2015, 9:50 AM

Let's hope that justice is served. If I were justice, I would serve the mugger's testicles raw on a plate to him as his next meal. That is, assuming low life mugger is a male.

NorthernLight wrote on February 18, 2015, 11:29 AM

We share the same idea for justice. The police have arrested a 25 year old male (now held on remand) and the case will be heard at the local Crown Court.
