About Owing a Pet Turtle

Turtles make good pets for some people. Not everyone wants a high maintenance pet, such as a dog, and some people may not be allowed certain pets where they live.

There are many different species of turtle sold in the pet trade, before you get one be sure to learn about the needs of each kind as some grow larger than others, some prefer deep water, and some need shallow water.

Turtles require heat lamps, a basking rock, and a UV lamp.

Each turtle has slightly different food requirements but most eat crickets, turtle pellets, as well as a few greens. Provided you do not use chemicals on your yard you can even pick them dandelion leaves.

Turtles can carry salmonella so it is a good idea to wash your hands after handling them.

Turtles have long lifespans which is a serious consideration when getting a pet.

The turtle in the photo is a Reeves Turtle , they are a small turtle.

My cousin used to have two turtles. I don't think that I am going to buy my own turtle because I already have a cat, a dog, a guinea pig and 3 rabbits!

I recall having had two small turtles as pets when I was 8 or so. I have no idea what type of turtles they were, but they never grew any larger than the palm of my hand. Nowadays I prefer to observe turtles in their own habitats.

I've heard people who have a turtle say how wonderful they are, but I prefer something I can cuddle.

i have never owned a turtle as a pet. I cannot imagine that they would be very cuddly. But I do understand that some people cannot handle a high maintenance pet such as a dog.

I have a few pet turtles. They are box turtles and they live in my back yard. They mate and have babies some years. They eat bugs from the yard, but we also feed them fruits, watermelon, tomato, etc. They also eat lunchmeat sometimes too. Healthy and have had them for 20-30+ years.

BNelson I had a pet turtle when I was a kid. They were small. Me an my brother had one each. We kept them together in the same tank. They did live a long tim. I haven't had any pets myself since. But my mother always had dogs. And I grew up with them as well.
