Talking To Your Children and Not Down To Them

Sometimes many parents forget one thing and that is that their children are human beings just as much as the next person out there. They have their own feelings as well as the next person.

Communication is important in all walks of life and its really important dealing with your children as well. That's why it's important that you talk to your children and not talk down to them. Creating a great relationship with their children can cause them to be a bit more respectful and understand why you ask of them the things that you ask of them.

In other words, its essential that you be extremely firm, but extremely fair with them. There comes a time where you're going to have to discipline them, but it's important to communicate exactly what they did wrong and do it calmly. If you act childish, that sends a mixed messages.

Leading by example is important and its important with parents as well as children.

Also, a parent needs to show a child that child can talk to the parent about anything without being yelled at or scolded. Telling the child is not enough. The child will respond to actions; not words. If the child fears telling his or her parents about a problem, the child may find the wrong answers in school or outside with friends.

It's important not to talk down to ANYONE. I never do. Who'm I?

That really is the key. Communication is important because children might fear the answers they get and thus seek out the answers that are wrong. And the parents often wonder why. Having this atmosphere of fearing asking questions can be bad.

Very true, people will resent that.

I totally agree, johnmariow. It is so important to let children know, they can talk to parents about anything.
