What Causes Heartburn?

Heartburn is caused by the stomach acid that escapes into the esophagus. The stomach, usually produces about a quart of “hydrochloric acid” every day to help break down the food you consume. The mucus coats the stomach and protects it from the acid, and the esophageal sphincter muscle is kept closed so that the acid does not seep through.

Sometimes the muscle doesn’t close properly and the acid is released where it will cause a burning sensation with belching, and discomfort. This is also known as “gastroesophageal reflux”.

Heartburn is often caused by overeating, birth control pills, pregnancy, certain foods, and smoking. Ulcers, stress, ailments, all can add to heartburn. You can help prevent heartburn by changing your eating patterns, and smoking. Using herbal teas and antacids can help with relief.

Drinking certain beverages after meals can help raw cabbage and raw potato juice have lots of alkaline minerals that help neutralize the stomach acidity. Aloe Vera juice helps to soothe the irritated esophagus and even sipping apple-cider vinegar mixed with water will help wash away the acid quickly.

My neighbor's husband had a lot of heartburn and I think he had some kind of surgery for it. He is ok today.
