Rainy Day Gift of Gratitude

Overnight and early morning thunderstorms here in the Florida Panhandle made for rainy day fun for me and my dog Valentino. We began our day becoming soaking wet during our morning walk in the neighborhood, trudging through mud puddles along our way.

After Valentino's mid-day snack, well hidden in his Kong toy to keep him busy for a bit, my dog needed another walk. Off we went for a quick potty walk in the back yard, again in the pouring rain.

I have trained my dog Valentino to pee on command, thankfully. His command words are, "Give thanks!" But of course, after my dog takes care of business, he sits pretty for a treat for which he is always thankful.

Today, standing in the rain awaiting the dog's response to my command by one of the tall pines, I looked down at the ground and found a beauty of a polished stone. It's sort of heart-shaped and oh, so pretty.

Too strange that all the time I've spent in the yard with my dogs I'd never seen this stone before! It was almost like it dropped right out of the trees along with the pine cones.

To me it was a gift of gratitude from nature. Surely it symbolizes my love for Valentino and his love for me. How grateful we both are to have one another. Yes, even on a rainy day.

I love this Ruth. A beautiful story and a beautiful thought. Valentino and you just go together perfectly. :)

He is smart as can be, Pam. This hound knew nearly nothing when we first met just a couple of months ago. Now, every day it seems he learns something new, and so do I.

Valentino sounds like a wonderful dog and companion. Finding the stone was a neat bit of serendipity.

I was amazed at my discovery! It made for a great reward for playing in the rain with my dog all day.

I really do love this boy, Barb! He is just so eager to please and to play, it is impossible not to return that right back to him.

I am glad that you and Valentino have each other. I hope that, one day, another dog will deem me worthy of adoption.

What kind of dog is Valentino? We have furry family members who live here with us.

Oh, how cool is that? Both the stone and that you trained your dog to go on command using the words "give thanks" My daughter trained hers to go on demand, but she uses "go potty", I like your command better..;)

I think you are quite right, Nancy, in that Valentino and I are a perfect pair.
