Sayings That Don't Make Sense

There are plenty of sayings I have heard in my years that just don't any sense. I really don't understand how or why they became famous in the first place. I know they are all either metaphors, idioms, or just random sayings but these are the ones that always troubled me some.

Sleep like a baby -- People always say "I slept like a baby" as if it's a good thing. Well it's actually not. Their sleep is full of interruptions and the duration is much shorter then adults. They do sleep a lot when they are very young and their cycle does get better over time, but in the beginning it's rough! Having had three children I just can't use this saying because I don't want to sleep like a baby.

You can't have your cake and eat it too -- Well then what's the sense in buying it? I like cake and if I buy one I am sure going to enjoy it!

It's no use crying over spilled milk -- Well yes it is! Now I have to clean it and go buy some more. I hate messes! I get that it's no use crying over it because it won't get you anywhere, but I'm going to cry anyways.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade -- Is life supplying the sugar? Because without it it's going to also be pretty sour! I prefer sweet over sour, thank you!

I couldn't care less or I could care less -- So wait you do care a little right? I get the saying was initially a sarcastic saying meaning 'it would be impossible for me to care less than I do because I do not care at all.' It just confuses me which might not be that hard thinking of some of these sayings.

A watched pot never boils over -- So if I stand in my kitchen watching it, it's not going to boil over. Is this magic or because I'm not going to allow it to? The actual meaning is that something you are waiting for will not happen while you are concentrating on it. Alright, I just won't be using this saying.

That's the pot calling the kettle black -- So your pot is talking to you? Maybe you should see someone about that!

There are plenty others that I just don't get, so maybe another post will be in the near future :)

LOL! I think the person who coined the term "sleep like a baby" has never actually had a baby. The one about the watched pot always got me too. That's just... not true!

Some of those things are true for some of us. My tea kettle never boils when I'm waiting for it to, but the minute I leave for a minute, it will. As for the cake, that simply means that once you've eaten it it's gone and you don't have it anymore. It means you can't have something both ways at once.
