Adventures in goat herding

I've had dogs and cats my entire life. Over the years I have also cared for gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, budgies, cocktiels, iguanas, a mouse, and a variety of fish. I currently have a small flock of chickens and 5 Nigerian Dwarf goats. The goats are new. Goats are "a whole 'nother" thing. I love them dearly. They each have a unique personality. They do occasionally make me wonder what I have gotten myself into. Last night I heard one of my goats calling. They live in our utility room in dog kennels in the evenings, until we get the fence built. I thought that they must be wanting their goat feed. I heard the clang of a stainless steel bowl getting knocked around. No problem. I handed out supper to my human kids and went to the utility room to feed my goats. As I enter the room, I notice something is off. I wasn't expecting to find my little buck, Trip, standing on top of the girls kennel and hollering for me. Two of my dogs were trying very hard to smell him, and he was trying very hard to avoid them. Upon interrogation, my children swear that his kennel was latched. There is no way of reaching the latch from inside, and Trip isn't talking. We may never know how he got out. I am thankful that my dogs blocked him from running amok through the rest of the house!

When one has goats, one must also have dogs to herd them. I know goats are very useful, but I don't envy you the task of keeping track of them.

4 of my 5 goats are still quite young. When they're old enough to breed I plan on milking my girls and making soap.

I understand that goats milk soap is very good for people with skin complaints. I know someone who has developed a good business with it. Hope your plan go well.

Isn't that interesting! I have often thought it would be neat to own goats. And I have never heard of Nigerian Dwarf goats. I just learned something new today!
