Glass Bottle Folklore

Glass Bottle Folklore

According to African # folklore , hanging bottles from a tree in your front yard keeps the evil spirits away. And in the South around the 16th and 17th centuries it was quite a common sight to see glass blue hanging bottles from trees, front porches, and on the windowsills of the homes.

The blue color started in the South and some homeowners would go so far as paint their doorframe and windows a specific color blue to keep away the spirits of the dead. The folklore goes that when the bottles are hanging, or standing on the windowsill and you blow across the top of the bottle, that noise you hear is suppose to be the spirit trapped inside the bottle.

By morning, when the sun rises, it kills the bad spirits that are trapped in the# bottles. Over time, many people have used other colors, but the blue glass bottle is the primary color for this folklore.
