Give it a rest
Trying to earn a living writing, hosting, promoting and selling new and fairly underground music is a fairly "live on the edge" business in terms of financial security. It is for this reason that I tend to frequent writing sites such as these because along with the social benefits, writing experience and exchange of knowledge and ideas it brings, there is also the chance to earn a few pennies slog the way. But after three days of running live shows, which between load in and load out is in itself a six hour slog on top of the six I have already put in sat at the keyboard, I sat down to pick up my deadlines and thought, just slow down a minute. These days there is no difference between a work day and a none work day as I'm constantly writing or failing that looking for new writing opportunities and commissions. But today I just thought, I'm going to have a day off, completely non work related.
I often feel a bit disconnected with the modern world, even though everything I do is reliant on technology, music, internet contact, even the basic art of penmanship is done on a Mac rather than with pen and paper. Today is going to be about basic things. I think a walk into town for lunch is a good start. Then a walk in the park and a chance to sit under those glorious three hundred million year old creatures that eat sunshine and drink rain. Maybe even a scan through the second hand book shops on the way home. Once home I will light the fire, get the house nice and warm and hit the sofa with a good book. That sounds like a great recharge.
