Chihuahuas and Pit Bulls

With my experience working at animal rescues, I have heard A LOT of prejudice's against different breeds. I'm writing this now to stop the nonsense that is being said about the 2 most negatively talked about breeds: Chihuahuas and Pit Bulls.

Did you know, pit bulls and chihuahuas make up 50-70% of ALL dogs in shelters/rescues. Why the high number? For one, there are idiots still out there who think they're going to get rich by breeding these types of dogs. And when they don't make money, they dump the puppies and parents in shelters. Another reason these dogs are filling up cages is because MANY MANY MANY potential adopters buy into all the "bad talk" and prejudices against these breeds and avoid choosing them.

Of course pit bulls are said to be dangerous, mean dogs. "Your kids are not safe around pit bulls." "Pit bulls will turn without warning." Every negative thing you have EVER heard about a pit bull, you can just toss out of your mind RIGHT NOW! Dogs are dying because people are not educating themselves! I have to bite my tongue every time someone who comes into the rescue to look at dogs says something about pit bulls being mean and dangerous. Because Heaven forbid I offend anyone. There was one man that I just had to say something to, because he was saying this nonsense to his kids. Don't want our next generation growing up being uneducated and mindless too. I have created a website, with a page specifically dedicated to these wonderful, family dogs.

Now Chihuahuas...people have it in their head that Chihuahuas are hyperactive, yappy little dogs. The only thing true in that sentence is "little." But only in stature, not personality. I have 4 Chihuahuas, and the only time they bark is when one of my 3 large dogs start to bark (usually at nothing). And Chihuahuas are extremely sweet little dogs, I will always own a Chihuahua from here on out. They LOVE their people. And there are Chihuahuas I have worked with who are really quiet. Of course, when people stop by All the dogs get so excited, they bark! They want to say hi! But of course, no matter if every single breed in the place is barking, I still here the ridiculous comments, "ugh that's why I don't want a Chihuahua." Seriously? What about the lab over there that's barking? Or the poodle? Are your ears deaf to them?

And here's something that really infuriated me, it was something my coworker heard, something that was said to her. A woman asked my coworker why there were so many Chihuahuas, and when my coworker explained it to this woman (that they are over bred and then abandoned), she responded with "oh. Well I guess they deserve to be here." WHAT!? How can a dog who has done NOTHING wrong except having bad luck with stupid people deserve to be in a cage??

HUNDREDS of these wonderful dogs are dying daily in shelters across the U.S. because of these prejudices. These FALSE prejudices. So I urge you, if you've ever had these thoughts (or any negative thoughts about ANY breeds specifically), to educate yourself better. Or better yet, volunteer at an animal rescue, go work with pit bulls and chihuahuas and you'll see first hand what amazing dogs they are!

And if you are looking to adopt any time soon, I would recommend either of these breeds!

It is evident that you are very passionate about the welfare of these dogs, and I applaud that. It is sad to see these animals suffer because of the stupidity of people.

It is as wrong to stereotypes dogs by their breed as it is people by the color of their skin. It is true that some breeds of dogs in general do better in one environment or another, but there are also individual differences within the dogs of any breed.

Closing down every puppy mill or farm and regulating every breeder is the way to go, next on the list puppies should never be sold around Christmas time.

It's sad that some people aren't willing to educate themselves. I myself love chihuahuas! They're such an awesome breed! :)
