Tales from the Cab?

Tales from the Cab?

As I said in an earlier post, driving a Big Truck is like riding a Eighty Thousand Pound Rocket. An eighteen Wheeler empty weights Forty Thousand pounds. With a full load it weighs Eighty Thousand pounds.

When we went through Driving School they explained to us the distances it would take to stop it at different speeds. I don’t know how many of you studied Physics in school. But there is a formula about Momentum. I don’t remember it now, but to explain it to you.

An eighty thousand pound truck going Fifty-Five Miles an Hour, takes three football fields to stop. To put this in perspective for us the instructor said that is a car was less than six truck lengths in front of you. At fifty-five miles an hour, and he locked his brakes. All you could do was lock your brakes and hang on. Because you were going to go over the top of him.

I wish more people thought about that when driving. I see many cut right in front of trucks a lot.

I work in a transport office and I am still amazed how anyone can drive these massive trucks and get back safely on our roads

That happen all the time. Folks in cars don't realize the danger they are in.

rjsezack wrote on January 7, 2015, 10:24 AM

I know, everytime I pass one now, I can't believe we really drove one. And never had a crash.

It is scary, It happen to us more times than I like to remember.

I seen one under a truck at a red light. He had pulled up beside the truck into the blind spot knowing the truck was turning. No one got hurt but the car no longer had a front end to it. I hope he learned his lesson and gives the trucks room now.

I definitely yield to the trucks, always!

I see that all the time, and there are drivers out there that are crazy or just don't care.
I am glad I ain't out there anymore.

There will always be super stupids when it comes to driving, whether driving a motor cycle. car, truck, these are the ones that will not obey the law. You see they are all taught the same lesson in driving they just wish not to obey.

I think I would feel really weird to be seated so high up. I suppose it gives an interesting view though.

rjsezack wrote on January 8, 2015, 8:57 AM

It is an interesting view. We have been through place in our car that we had driven pass in the truck,, and it does not look the same. In a truck you are a good 10 feet higher than a car.

rjsezack wrote on January 8, 2015, 8:58 AM

And we did see all kinds of them while we were out there, didn't we.

I used to work for a trash company. I learned a lot about how hard it is for a large truck to stop. I wish the ordinary citizen would take that into account while they are driving. I have been out on accidents scenes (for my job) and the images will never go away.
