Something New In 2014

Tell me something you did in 2014 that you hadn't done before

The most recent trip away I took had to be one of the highlights of the year. I stayed in a small B&B (not new - done that before) but this one was a little different.

Opening the front door we were regularly greeted by Pine Martens on the front lawn waiting patiently for some food. I had seen a Pine Marten before in a wildlife park but this situation was very different. Where that one was effectively a caged animal, these Pine Martens were free to go where ever they pleased but they the knew they were safe at this B&B and would regularly be fed.

Now the something new in this post comes from actually being able to hand feed wild Pine Martens. Guided by scent rather than their eyes, they make their way tentatively towards you as you hold out a couple of Custard Cream biscuits to them. For some reason they prefer two rather than one.

Sometimes two biscuits were a bit too much to handle as you can see from the video we captured on the remote camera:

Incredible getting so close to a wild animal (which could be very dangerous) while feeling completely safe.

Photo attached - two trying to get some biscuits. So disappointed it was out of focus! They are so fast!

The Pine Martens look very cute. I must say I have never seen animals quite like that before. I guess the only new thing I had done in 2014 was my first visit to Amsterdam, Netherlands.

I've been to Amsterdam before although I'm not sure if the airport really counts :) Would love to explore the country by bike

I can't say I did much because I have been sick a year already which started with gangrene in my gallbladder and put me into respiratory distress which I still have pulmonary problems. However, I have never been a baked fish fan, and never have been good at it. I cooked some Tilapia about 3 weeks ago, which counts for last year. It turned out really good. My daughter loved it and ate every bite.

Wow! I hope 2015 turns out to be a lot better year for you! Cooking Tilapia definitely counts! I still haven't got the hang of cooking fish - always overdone!

I'm ashamed to say I wouldn't have known what a pine marten was if I hadn't seen your photo. I would've said it was a bird! They look such a cute animal

Those are so cute. I can't think of anything new I did, other than start posting my thoughts on line.

You're not the only one to have said that so don't worry! I had no idea what they were until a few years ago. They are very cute but they have quite a bite on them!

I have not heard of a Pine Marten before now are they native to where you live only?

I honestly can't think of something new that I did in 2014. I am sure there was something but just can't think of it right now. Oh, I started using cinnamon in my coffee instead of a sweetner.

Oh they are cute! I have never seen these before, I think I'd quite like to!

OUCH. Well, do something different for 2015. That sounds perfectly miserable. I'm glad the tilapia turned out well.

Well, I got engaged. I've never done that before. We have a date, an officiant, a venue and place for the reception. It's fun, but I won't be doing this again real soon.

Oh that's sad to hear. I really hope you do better this year. Most of last year I spent in (increasing) pain due to deterioration of the bones in my hand/wrist because of severe arthritis. My dominant right hand, too. Makes it hard to type/post at times. I will be seeing a hand specialist in about a week, which I'm dreading. I've already had 2 surgeries on the hand, emoticon

Pine Martins are new to me, as I don't recall ever hearing about them before. Now you have caught my interest and I will have to google them up!

It sounds like an amazing experience especially being up close with nature like that. I must get to know my animals a bit better, I've never heard of them before. They look adorable though.

Aww congratulations! I can imagine how much work it takes! Think I've still got a little while to wait though :)

Thanks. Got a lot of it done. The next big thing is the invitations. And buying dress. And I think there's something about a wedding ring in there, too.

I had no idea what Pine Martens are until now. Thanks for the 'I learned something new today' moment!

I watched the video - cute and clever! Although I am a keen hillwalker in the highlands of Scotland I have never actually seen a pine marten. I have seen plenty of signs of them but not the actual creature itself.
