A Photo Tip for Everyone

I discovered this quite by accident today. I knew that the introductory photo (if originally uploaded at a larger size) could be enlarged by opening it in a new tab. But I had forgotten about the feature in my browser. I was looking at the photo of young emus by Oceanblue and I had trouble getting a good look at them. So I opened the photo in a new tab. That made it much larger. But I still wanted a closer look. I'm using in Windows 7.

I moved my cursor over the enlarged photo and the cursor turned into a zoom. So I clicked on the little + and the photo enlarged to cover the whole window. Three of the emus now filled the space the entire photo had taken as originally seen in the post. I tried the same trick on my iMac and it worked, there, too, in Chrome.

Go ahead. Try it with this photo of what I believe are wild berries I saw on my walk today. At first I thought it was poison oak, but then I looked for the thorns on the branches and decided it was berries. You may have to enlarge the photo to see the thorns. Look at the bare vine branches near the middle of the photo. Do you see them? How much enlarging did you need to do to see them?

I tried it and nothing happened when I clicked on it to see it in a new tab. Let me try again. One second. OK I opened it in a new tab but I got no zoom thingy. I could see a small box but it doesn't appear to be zoomed in. I am on Chrome with Windows 7 as well.

Brenda wrote on January 3, 2015, 1:45 AM

I got it to open up in new tab but could not go further. When I floated the mouse over the enlarged photo in new tab it did not turn into zoom. bummers.

tafmona wrote on January 3, 2015, 3:53 AM

I have never treid this, I think its time I should explore, thanks for sharing this

Kasman wrote on January 3, 2015, 4:14 AM

BarbRad PattyTherre Brenda - it seems that it doesn't work in all cases (it didn't work for me either - don't know why) but when I opened the image in a new tab I found that Control+ worked (hold down the Control key and press the + key) but don't be surprised if that doesn't work for you either!

Gina145 wrote on January 3, 2015, 4:55 AM

I have the Hoverzoom extension installed in Chrome so I just have to hover the arrow over photos and they'll enlarge without my opening them in a new tab. What you mentioned only works if the photo is bigger than the size of the tab in which it's being displayed.

ConstantDementia wrote on January 3, 2015, 5:09 AM

I tried it but failed. I guess I am not much of a tech savvy persona. Let me try it again one more time.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:43 AM

BarbRad Didn't work for me either (WinXP + Chrome) at first, but then I used the [Crtl][+] shortcut, as Kasman suggested, and it worked perfectly. That should work for Windows, Linux and ChromeOS according to Chrome Help Pages. Thanks for the tip!

karen5416 wrote on January 3, 2015, 9:49 AM

Good tip but didn't work on my laptop, i am using Chrome 7. I will keep trying

Feisty56 wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:08 AM

I'm a Firefox user, whatever the most recent incarnation of it is what I am using. I didn't want to be left out (ha ha), so gave the Control key and the + key a go once I had the photo open in a new tab and am happy to report it worked!

Kasman wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:13 AM

Gina145 - Chrome extensions are great aren't they! I also have installed a few. The only thing you need to be careful of is that too many will slow down your browser.

Ellis wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:21 AM

I think it will only zoom to display up to the original size...as this pic is only 800x600 it is probably already displaying full size on most peoples screens.

Gina145 wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:37 AM

Thanks for the warning. I didn't think of that. I seem to have quite a few of them, but I'm not sure there are any I can get rid of.

AngelSharum wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:45 AM

I use Firefox and I just right clicked and did View Image and it showed up big for me.

OldRoadsOnceTraveled wrote on January 3, 2015, 12:34 PM

When I opened the picture in a new tab on Chrome in Windows 7, it didn't zoom for me, but it did give me the zoom tool when I chose the "Inspect Element" option.

catsholiday wrote on January 3, 2015, 2:28 PM

I got it in a new window but no + for getting it bigger. The new window made it pretty big though

VinceSummers wrote on January 3, 2015, 3:47 PM

I don't use Chrome. But I can make the image larger. Large enough, at any rate. There are other ways to increase image size that I have at my finger tips.

k2705 wrote on January 3, 2015, 4:41 PM

I've never tried this, will have to give it a try I think could be handy.

Debbie wrote on January 3, 2015, 5:49 PM

I need to spend some time looking at how to include pics with my posts as I would love to include some of my own but as yet, am a bit clueless how to do it

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:02 PM

See the comment by Kasman below.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:03 PM

See the comment by Kasman below. And this only worked if the original photo is large enough to enlarge more on screen. The one in this post will get a bit larger.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:04 PM

Good luck. Be sure to read the comments below this to see what others found.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:05 PM

Thanks for chiming in with a helpful hint.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:06 PM

Better thank Kasman , too. It's great how we can solve a problem when we work together.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:07 PM

Quite true. Some people's photos don't expand because they are already original size.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:09 PM

Seems what we've learned here is that these hints work differently for different people on different computers.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:09 PM

I'm using a desktop. I haven't tried it on a laptop.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:11 PM

It's not on mine. The intro photo is always displayed smaller than the original on my computer. I wonder why the difference.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:12 PM

I never realized what a variety of experiences we would have trying to apply this hint.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:12 PM

One more approach!

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:13 PM

Maybe you your new window already displayed it at full size.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:14 PM

And you won't tell us?

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:14 PM

I find it very handy.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:16 PM

It's not hard. There's a place you can upload your intro photo in the "new article" form. And do read the FAQ for more instructions.

AngelSharum wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:33 PM

Yep, every browser has different ways of doing things I'm sure.

VinceSummers wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:40 PM

I copy/paste into Irfanview and save. Then I view it and increase size, copy and paste into a new Irfanview window and save it under its original name. It sounds complicated, but it's pretty quick and I don't have to do it often. Irfanview is a great free, image package.

FreyaYuki wrote on January 4, 2015, 1:18 AM

Never tried this before. Thanks for the tip. Sometimes, what I do is right-click on an image and you can usually see something like "open image in new tab". If you click on that, you can automatically see an enlarged version of the photo.

BarbRad wrote on January 4, 2015, 4:39 AM

Right. I've always done that. But if the image still isn't full size, you can use the zoom. You can actually use it from the Chrome dropdown menu, as well. It will enlarge whatever is on the page, including the print.

Kasman wrote on January 4, 2015, 6:23 AM

Ellis - not so! {Cntrl}{+} will enlarge to infinity - or at least the resolution of your screen.

nbaquero wrote on January 4, 2015, 6:23 AM

Yes thanks to Kasman for sure. Karen5416 I am using a laptop and it worked . In fact I tested this tip as follows:
Windows XP and Chome
Windows XP and FIrefox
Windows 8.1 and Chrome
Linux Mint 16.1 and Chrome
Linux Mint 16.1 and Firefox
In all cases once the picture is open in a new tab, I can zoom in/out with the [Ctrl][+] and [Ctrl][-] shortcuts.

Kasman wrote on January 4, 2015, 6:27 AM

Debbie - AngelSharum has written a very good guide on how to use multiple images on our posts. Go here: http://goo.gl/0tyRLE
I have also written a post on how to use the photo-sharing site Pixabay: Go here: http://goo.gl/qEuUrt
BarbRad 's suggestion that you read the FAQs is a good one - there is a lot in there about using photos on posts as well as much more you should know.

karen5416 wrote on January 4, 2015, 9:37 AM

Ahhh might have to try it on my desktop

karen5416 wrote on January 4, 2015, 9:42 AM

It doesn't work for me I have tried a few times

maxeen wrote on January 4, 2015, 9:47 AM

Yes ,just done it .I have done it by searching for similar image in googl but this is speedier, good tip..

nbaquero wrote on January 4, 2015, 9:48 AM

Ok, I am not familiar with Chrome 7 you mean Chrome and Windows 7?

Dustin4ever wrote on January 4, 2015, 4:47 PM

Hi Barb! I just joined today and cannot tp most yet but am reading and commenting. This is good to know about the photos.

BarbRad wrote on January 4, 2015, 5:44 PM

Whatever it takes.

BarbRad wrote on January 4, 2015, 5:45 PM

I'm very happy to see you here. It feel like homecoming week. I'm off to your profile page.

OnlyErin6 wrote on January 5, 2015, 1:51 AM

That's useful. Thanks. I need to start using some photos on my posts, I've been neglecting it entirely.

I'm reading this on my tablet, so can stretch the image, but I'm going to try out your tip on the main counter later.
